Picture the scenario. You’ve been waiting for game X for the best part of a year. Ever since you saw those screenshots in a magazine you’ve been drooling over the thought of getting your grubby little hands on it. The day has finally arrived, you’ve scraped enough money to get it so you nip into your local SR to pick up your reserved copy. When you get home, it is all that you imagined and more – you wonder how empty your life was without it. So you decide to let people you converse with on a daily basis know that you’ve got it. Ukchatforums… oh yeah they’ll appreciate it on there.

By the time you’re on the site there is already a thread dedicated to game X. What a perfect place to let the world know you own it! You click on it, and scan up the page only to find out to your horror that someone on the forums has completed the game in 2 hours and written a spoiler! Its too late – by the time you realise what it is you’ve already read how to defeat Metal Gear Ray or whoever, and the end cut scene has been described in every last sordid little detail!

Now I’m more than happy to discuss games, but why oh why don’t people exercise a little restraint when posting on game related topics? It’s not big or clever to ruin someone’s experience, especially when they’ve only had the game for a few hours. I understand people’s excitement to analyse a game and be the first to say they did this or did that, but it only takes one caption in the message title to indicate that you click on that topic at your own risk.

In fact, thinking about it, SR has its own areas dedicated to spoilers – its called Ukhints (and Ukcheats to a lesser extent). Next time you are desperate to let the world know how to complete a game, please save many of us from annoyance and use these areas.

I suppose people should be fairly careful about exposing secrets, but readers can easily avoid them if they're careful enough.
