I dont know why some games have so many expansion packs which require the origional game because no matter how bad the original game is you must buy it. Why have so many small expansion packs(e.g THE SIMS) when you could just have one massive one? I think Cossacks is a good example because most expansion packs are stand alone versions.

Homeworld cataclysm is like cosacks really for add-ons. Homeworld is great, and Cataclysm is a stand alone expansion to the game. the same engine and base presentation, but with completely different races and units for each one. and both games are cheap...very - surprising as ive never seen an RTS so visually lush and 3D
The answer is money my good man. The companies know that people will just buy pack after pack because they love the game so much and so instead of putting everything in one pack and only making a small profit, they draw it out milking the customers dry and then return to their evil grey towers to count their millions.
