Search the web for gif optimizers. Animations are a bit more difficult, but can still be done given the right tools (I found a great online gif animation optimizer, but I never saved it in my favourites).
It can be done quite easily, but seeing as it's a *competition* you can't expect people to do it for you.

You could make them gif images but you may get a bit of colour loss
