Now I know we have all been playing games for a different number of years, some of us may have started at teh very beginning and seen how it has all progressed and some may have only recently got into the world of gaming. Either way we probably all have happy moments of playing great games or finally getting the console or new game you had been waiting ages for.
I thought about this the other day, all the great games I have played, or the times when you manage to get your mates over and see who is the best at all the games then watch the cheating, sly tactics and punch ups that result from it all.
Just in general all the fun that you really can have.
So here are my memories, please post yours too.
I don't remember the first time I ever played a computer game but I am pretty sure it would have been one of those hand held ones with just the one game built in. The one I remember having was a game where you had to control the ambulance men and catch monkeys falling from trees and put them in the back of an ambulance. Pretty crap game but really addictive just as I always wanted to get a better score than my brother.
I remember my dad always having an interest in some games. He bought me and my brother an Amstrad, Dragon32 and a spectrum when we were kids although I think he probably bought them for himself. There were a few games I still remember - apart from the obvious classic games like frogger etc there was one on the amstrad (I think) called Bionic commando. You controlled this soldier who had a bionic arm which stretched so you could grab onto ledges in the distance. Wasn't amazing in terms of graphics or gameplay but I loved it. Used to play it all the time. We also had the Daily Thompson decathalon game which was the reason why so many joysticks in our house got broke. Having to shoogle the joystick as fast as you could is what gaming used to be about. :-)
One christmas we got an commadore amiga a tv and a handful of games. Shadow of the beast being one of them and for the first few weeks the intro to that game gave me the heebie geebies. I remember around this time there were quite a lot of magazines with games on them and local small games shops around town selling all kind of games. Over the years we collected loads of Amiga games, my dad used to get a few new ones every week. Sensible soccer was always a favourite. So simplistic but an amazingly addictive and enjoyable game. There were loads of games we had that I played again and again. Treasure Island Dizzy used to really annoy me as I always couldn't find the one last coin needed to get onto the boat with my outboard motor. Don't think I ever completed it.
We had loads of cool multiplayer games which either put you against each other or put you in the same side against the computer. Spent many many hours playing games with my brother and all his/my mates.
I never seen the attraction of the NES, a friend had one and I would play it from time to time but I never thought it was really great. But when the SNES came out and I played Mario Kart I knew I would have to get one. Next birthday I got money and went shopping with my dad to find the best deal and the games I wanted. Remember getting Mario Kart, Royal Rumble and Fifa.
Mario Kart still remains one of the most addictive multiplayer games ever, it was easy to spend hours and hours playing without realising how long you had been sat there playing. Then I got Zelda. Fantastic. Thats the way I describe it. Collecting all the equipment and finding the right items etc it truely was one of the best games I had played at the time.
The year the playstation came out I was advised by one of my dads friends that they were really great. I remember that just before phillips (I think) released some new game thing which was rather pants so I was a bit wary of getting a PSX. I had to sell my SNES as my parents didn't see the point in having both. Now I wish I had kept it but I got a good price for it so I could buy a PSX and a few games so I decided to get the PSX.
A wise move it soon proved to be.
I got the PSX, wasn't long after they came out and I got games like Destruction Derby and Wipeout with it.
My dads friend recommended I got my PSX chipped as he had recently imported some freat games. He informed me of a new game he had called Resident Evil and it was a game I should really consider getting. So I did.
Another great game, a bit scary when the dog jumps through the window etc but all my friends thought it was great. Experienced a lot of great games on my PSX. Gran turismo etc all proved just how great games of this time could be and it made me appreciate the time and effort of most developers to really make something special.
I spent a lof of money on my PSX and all the many many games I bought for it.
Decided against selling it when the PS2 came out just for the memories I wanted to keep.
I still have most of the consoles I have owned. The spectrum, Dragon32 and amstrad are up the loft somewhere and the amiga and PSX and all their games are in my storage cupboard which is a total mess and needs to be cleaned.
I am considering buying a SNES again just complete my collection of all the ones I have had.
Which leads us to around this time. I now own a PS2 and a gamecube with some great games for both. Grand theft auto 3 etc just show how far games have come since I started playing and if it continues like this then we could see some really mind blowing things in the future.
I for one am looking forward to what is yet to come......
But latley when we play some games we get too drunk to remember anything that happened.
:-P
:-D
Nice post, I'll post my memories later :-D
