But there was no hype there, which could have made things all the better or what has actually happened- all the worse. You see, sometimes games are over hyped resulting in unhappy and critical responses to them, but other times games get the recognition they justly deserve. Now, this isn't the case with Onimusha 2.
It's a fantastic RPG title that received very little if at all any hype, but from what I previously heard and saw about it, there was typically enough hype inside of myself, which was at a very high state. This could have had a bad resultant effect, if the game wasn't as good as my very high expectations, but the thing is, it surpassed my every prediction!
Whilst Final Fantasy X received lots of attention from RPG fans, Onimusha 2 got very little. This is wrong for one reason and one reason alone - Onimusha 2 is a much better game! It's obvious that the Final Fantasy franchise that has stuck with the industry for a long time is to blame for shadowing other quality RPG titles like Onimusha, but that doesn't necessarily guarantee that it will be a better game, which it isn't.
Onimusha 2 is an overwhelming adventure of good versus evil that plays brilliantly and looks absolutely stunning. You progress through certain stages of the game that bring you to more intense confrontations, better gameplay and even better videos. Sure, FFX has it's own fair share of good graphics, but this is only for its FMV sequences. Compare the in-game action and appearance between the two and you will see that Onimusha 2 is the clear winner. The graphics are crisp with pre-rendered and at times interactive backgrounds and the gameplay is fantastically involving.
FFX's gameplay doesn't compare because when it comes to battling enemies, the action is too slow and the whole 'select an attack' feature is pants! It's much more fun and skilful to press a combination of buttons to perform different attacks than having to select a move from a list each time. Yeah, it may require more thought, but so does Onimusha 2. Like some enemies you come across can be defeated easier with a certain weapon than others, so it is up to you to choose from your inventory the weapon you think will benefit you more.
I'm not saying that Onimusha 2 is a perfect game, because it isn't. It's main flaw is the cheesy voice acting, clearly showing a Japanese language conversion, but other than that, there's nothing else that spoils it. It gives you enjoyable little tasks/puzzles during the game like having to find the right combination to unlock a chest, which may result in a new weapon or an increase in health. The boss battles are fun, intense and never boring.
Just the way the whole game is layed out is superb. It's not all hack and slashing of demons because you also have to do a bit of exploring as well, through villages and caves and things. Plus, it has lots of cool features like being able to upgrade your weapons and armour, trade useful items between important characters in the game and being able to control different characters with different fighting styles at certain situations in the game. Just seeing the water effects in this game alone will enlighten you to why I am saying what I am saying, that this game is clearly and wrongly underrated, which it is.
I think even the FFX fans would enjoy and benefit from the experience of such a great RPG renevation like Onimusha 2, so they can see that the Final Fantasy franchise is not so superior after all. I can't think of a reason why a person wouldn't like this game, unless they were plainly stupid. Don't get me wrong, I too am a Final Fantasy basher, but it's because of such high reputations that good games like this one are being missed out on.
Notice that I never really liked another RPG that wasn't Final Fantasy until I played the first Onimusha. My advice to any RPG or non-RPG fan (basically everyone) is to just play this game...just have a little go..and just prove me wrong that you'll never feel like coming back to it. It's simply a fantastic adventure with lots of credible material. Hopefully, Onimusha 3 will be more than an idea at the place of Capcom, and maybe, just maybe, people will realise how good these games really are.
Thanks for your patience
Thanks for clearing that up people that Onimusha 2 isn't fully an RPG title like FFX, but it still doesn't change my opinion. Adventure-wise, Onimusha 2 is simply breathtaking, maybe I just prefer how it plays to FFX, but the fact still remains that this game along with its predcessor was unfairly ignored by the masses, and some that aven't even played it still underrate it!
And FFX is a completely different type of game! That's like saying "Yeah, Gran Turismo is good, but Virtua Tennis does everything so much better!"
I had had my fill of FFX for the time being and wanted something else to play, so I stuck onimusha in. I was very suprised. I had been overlooking a gem of a game for too long. The only problem. I finished it the same day that I started it.
So the next day I went out and bought Onimusha 2. I wasn't dissapointed. The friend system really helped to bring the game alive. It took my nearly the rest of the week to complete the game, and even then, I haden't seen all of the. In time I will go back and complete the game more fully.
I have to object to your direct comparison of the Onimushia game to the Final Fantasy games. They are different types of game. The Onimusha games are not RPG games. The only real RPG elements they have are the leveling up of your weapons. There is a place in the market for both Onimusha games and for Final Fantasy games. Especially since Final Fantasy games are much more involved, longer processes.
I was under the impression that Onimusha 3 was already under development. It is to be the last in what is in my mind a very well concieves and realised triology of survial horror games.
However I do not see them as the same type of game. FFX was an RPG whereas Onimusha 2 is an action adventure with RPG elements, so I really can't compair them. I was dissapointed with FFX (where the hell did the world map go!, I want to level up!) but it still caught my heart. Onimusha 2 on the other hand I have no complaints about, it is perfect in my eyes. I can't wait for Onimusha 3, the third and final part.
