There are so many critics out there criticising games that they are too violent and they should be banned but violence is part of human nature, it’s an amazing cure for stress. What happens when you suppress something and you carry on doing it, that’s right it blows up and then causes major damage (same rules apply to stress). I have met many different gamers from all round the world in my time but I have never in my life met a violent one (must have a link with games) can games really be the cure for all crimes in the world. People tell me violent games affect behaviour and make your more violent, infact I say they are completely wrong as every gamer is living proof that games don’t make us more violent they infact make us less violent.
I say they should try an experiment on the world most violent criminals and lock them up in a cell with a computer games machine and games like (GTA3, POSTAL etc) the more violent the better and I can assure you when they come out they will be the nicest harmless type of person you have ever met. Games can easily be the perfect weapons against crime but we just haven’t realised it yet. (Ever heard of two negatives make a positive).
Almost every game out there is a violent game, a lot of them are just disguised as nice innocent angle games which parent are lead to believe are harmless, but little do they know it is disguised violence, even Mario, (jumping and killing) Sonic (jumping and sawing the baddies in half), Pokemon (fighting and punishing the opponent in various horrible ways to death, and then writing that the enemy fainted, to justify it being not violent). The question is why, why are they violent? The answer is because we ENJOY them, yes that’s right we find violence enjoyable, and something that is enjoyable makes money, and that’s what all companies care about. Almost every great game out there I can think of has to be violent in so why or another (Maybe Tetris is an exception but that sound of crushing bricks, maybe consider a fraction violent or maybe FIFA but the fouls are violent). So there you have it the conclusion to all critics who think violence in games is a bad thing, they’ll just have to live with it, its part of human nature.
Good post, hope the bit about making violent criminals into pussycats through the application of GTA3 was tongue-in-cheek, I couldn't tell.
here's my opinion.
The 'problem' with violent games is not the violence itself, it's the moral context of the violence in the game world. What gets the Daily Mail readerships backs up (or would do if they had an inkling of what they were raving about) is the positive reinforcement of violence. Let's take GTA3 as the example, the player is positively rewarded for running people over, blowing them up, killing innocents and murdering policeman. We all realise this is a bit of fun, but on a subconscious level, there's a background message saying violence is good. In the case of GTA3, that's the whole point. Your favourite beat 'em up is the same on a lesser scale - the one who can hurt his opponent more emerges the victor. Violence=good. Games that lean the other way or fewer in number. Lemmings is one that springs to mind. Typical good vs. evil (every RPG under the sun) is more of a grey area.
The moral message that a violence=good game sends out is indeed quite dark. However, the majority of us are in touch with reality enough to identify that this is a game, and the moral message of kill=good is disregarded. It would take an extremely impressionable, gullible and foolish person to take this on board and be morally influenced it. However, people like this do exist, both young kids and those who are a few slices short of a sandwich.
I digress anyway.
Giving criminals GTA3 will not affect their criminality or morality, in exactly the same way that it won't affect yours or mine. It may reduce their stress levels (as it does yours and mine), but it won't turn them into socially well adapted and trustworthy members of the community.
I feel that you'd be better off giving them something more abstract, along the lines of Tetris, Puzzle Bobble, Kurushi, Mr Driller or Fantavision. Much more soothing, and there's without a shadow of a doubt, no morally reprehensible implications.
Right, that's me done.
Cheery-bye.
Hmmmm, okay i'll write somthin. I think Videa games are just being used as a scapegate (rather like monkey_man was the other day...) AS you say, everything can be percieved to be violent, and there is just as much Violence on TV. ANd any game that is deemed too violent is rated accordingly. Its up to the parents ( the people complaining?) to make sure thier kids dont get products that are only intended for over 18s....
