Back in the early to mid Nineties, in many peoples, and my opinion, the gaming industry was at the peak of its powers - new, inventive games were being released to a public which had an open mind, Developers were testing the boundaries of the 16-bit generation and, most importantly, gamers were enjoying themselves. Gaming was mostly considered for 'geeks' by the teenagers of the time, and so it had a bad image with the public. Games couldn't rely on astounding graphics to sell either - great games were the ones which whipped of the shelves quickest. This was a time when Nintendo were king
The playstation changed all of this. When the PS1 was released the world finally saw 3D games and life-like (for the time) graphics. Millions of the little grey boxes were shipped and Gaming had truly become fashionable. Games developers started to release more games, spending less and less time on them. Suddenly everything the gaming world had once stood for had been ripped away by trend hungry teenagers who needed something to show off to there mates at the weekend. Innovation replaced by duplication, Great games replaces by the same games over and over again and Nintendo replaced by Sony.
Many think that todays world full of over-advertising, no imagination and photo - realistic graphics are the best times that gamers have ever seen. When I told my step-brother that my favourite console was SNES he laughed at me. He explained that the N64 was better than the SNES and the Gamecube was better than them both. After being asked, he admitted it was because the graphics were better as the consoles grew older. When I tried to persuade him the game play was the key, it was met with a chorus of 'shut up' and 'no'. He is the kind of person that has caused the games industry to degenerate to this He is the kind of person that buys a game down to hype, graphics and his mates saying he should waste £40. He is the kind of person which forced SEGA out of the console market and into just another 3rd party developer. He is now your typical gamer.
There is a bright side, however. He asked me whether I planned to own my Gamecube in 20 years time, and I replied to this 'yes'. He mocked me for around 5 minutes on how I'm going to be 30 and still playing games. Maybe this type of gamer will soon drop out of console ownership when they finish puberty. Hopefully the guns and gore of games won't be as much of a pull to them as they are now. That'll be the time when Microsoft and Sony drop out of the console wars. That will be a time when SEGA fight for the crown of kings again. That'll be a time to battle with the 16-bit era for the title of 'golden age of gaming'. And that will be the time when most of you will have stopped playing games.
A: My wee brother still has one.
B: I have PS2.
I see what you mean though, I don't see myself as a typical kind of gamer but it takes time to not become one. For example, I once was until I joined these forums and started talking about games and stuff alot more.
I never sell any of my old consoles, I've kept them all. My Amiga CD32 and my Master System. They are both cool.
