If you've wondered how simple it is to register a website domain name with Freeola/Getdotted then fear not, it's simple!

I'm a Freeola 'fan', and thought I would try to show the steps involved.

Today I registered a domain for my son (not sure what we are going to use it for yet!) and I've used this domain for my "walkthrough".

I've used some of my free Freeola web space to show how it went: http://www.hmmm.ip3.co.uk/freeola/

I hope people find this useful ;¬)

I'm pleased to see a few people have viewed this 'walk-through' which shows just how quick and easily you can get a website up and running with Freeola - In just over an hour in my case!

Feel free to ask questions if you are thinking of registering a domain name...

Registering a domain name with Freeola:

Full story http://www.hmmm.ip3.co.uk/freeola/

First step was to choose an available name! This can be the tricky bit as they are a bit like personalised car number plates - all the good one's have gone!

Visiting http://getdotted.com/ I found that the co.uk version of my chosen name was still available.

TIP
The .com and .net versions had already been taken. I always have a look to see how the owners are using them, just in case the contents could embarrass you (or your visitors) if they should type the wrong address by accident.

This was how quick things were:

14.10 Ordered my domain name by following the simple instructions I was presented with. I had previously registered with Freeola, if this was my first time then I had the option to setup a free account.

14:25 Email confirmation that my order had been received by Freeola.

14:53 Another email confirming the registration had been successful and the name was mine.
This email contains links and info on what to do next.

I logged in to MyFreeola (this is where you have access to all your personal settings etc.)
As you can see below, I was presented with a message saying "DOMAIN NAME SET-UP REQUIRED"

After following this link I was presented with the screen below:

As I was ready to set things up I clicked "Yes Please" and followed the instructions to create a new Freeola website. You also have options to create email addresses (which I ignored as I prefer to set these up later), have a Freeola holding page or if you have another Freeola website you can point this domain name to that.
You get a message telling you that you should wait at least 20 minutes while things are setup before trying to access the site. You can see the screen below by clicking the Web Sites link.

15:08 Using the Web Space FTP Link I was able to access the site. If you try too early you will be presented with a password failure screen. Just try again later. I then moved a basic holding page to the site by dragging it from a folder on my PC to the HTDOCS folder in the FTP window. Make sure you call it index.htm (it must be index or else it won't be visible to your visitors).

15:29 My website was now available to the world!
Even though I had put my index page on the site at 15:08 it wasn't available until now - this delay is while the webs DNS (Domain Name Servers) update themselves. The timings above were for what happened for me today, but don't panic if things take a bit longer - by the nature of the internet things will vary.

If you've got any questions on all of this or have errors when you try yourself, please feel free to post them on the Freeola Web Development forum.
