We've already seen countless (usually dire) celluloid versions of games shame the cinemas of the world in the last few years. A few notable monstronsities spring to mind; Bob Hoskins as Mario? Kylie as Cammie? Urgh. Anyway, the original games that these films were based on were abstract concepts, unrelated to other artistic media, and influeneced only by previous games (if at all).

However, with the recent increase in hardware powers, we've begun to see a cross-over from film-making to the game development community. Res Evil being a prime example, it's easy to see how the work of films like George Romero's Living Dead has influenced CAPCOM in their choice of camera angles and set-pieces. Recent iterations of Final Fantasy borrow heavily from action films in their cut-scenes, as well as literature in their (usually crude) character development.

The thing that interests me is that we're now seeing 2nd generation cross-fertilization from film-influenced games back to films. Obviously, the Final Fantasy movie (which I didn't see, so can't comment on), but also in the forthcoming Res Evil film. I'm interested to see how much of the original influence of the game (i.e. the films) will carry over to the new film. I would hope that it captures the same cinematics that made Res Evil so revolutionary, rather than being another cheap, terrible rip-off of a money-making licence.

In the future, this trend may look set to continue, especially in light of the approaching CGI technology, where perhaps the game and film development could be integrated into one, allowed passive and active versions of the same feature. What really interests me is when the bouncing influences continue to cross-breed, a game draws inspiriation from a film, a film is made of the game, a game is made of that film version.....you see what I mean?

Anyway, enough speculative drivel from me.
