Nice Guys finish last

Is this statement really true? Well what ever happen to great game makers like Atari, and the makers of king of fighters (ahh forgot the name of that company) and countless others like Commodore, Amiga, Sega and US Gold, etc , I know Sega are still around but now they are not as popular as they use to be.

In my opinion a lot of great games come from small companies and the big companies usually ruin them, by making financial decisions a priority over the quality of the game. Now a days there is a major lack of originality in the market because companies know that if they just make remakes of old games or sequels they will sell better, I know occasionally an original game pops up (like devil may cry) and makes a complete success. But most of the time original ideas aren’t developed enough (maybe the companies fear to much effort will go to waste if the idea is a failure) games like ‘shadow of memories’ correct me if I’m wrong but this game had the potential to be a great game (and it was an original idea too) if only it were developed a little further. Other types of games like Burnout although it was a good remake of old arcade style game, it didn’t quite have that extra inventively to it, to make it a classic.

What can be done is, create more competition in the games market, this will eventually lead to the making of more and more original games as developers try harder to make games successful, unlike the current situation where only the major companies have the money and power to advertise games enough to make it a success. One example that pops to mind is MDK this was a great game when it came out, but because the company was so small and couldn’t afford to advertise a lot on it, so it did badly in the shops.

Well what does the future hold? Well thank god, the future is bright the future is original, ok well maybe not yet but because a lot of major big money companies are going to be locked in fierce battle for supremacy (mainly Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft), a lot of effort will be put in to try and make new and original games. So although it is a good thing for us but in the end, companies who get hold of a few original ideas just stop producing more and starting making clones because it generates more money, why because originals ideas always have that risk factor of being unsuccessful. I think this is the main reason companies who try and make a lot of original ideas always end up with the least profit. After all, major companies are in it for the money and not to produce the ultimate game.
