Can anyone recommend a decent mailing-list script that is easy to get up and running on Freeola's servers? You know, the type of thing... "Enter your name and e-mail address to be informed of updates to our site" - that sort of thing.

I've tried a couple but can't get them working, despite following installation instructions to the letter. One of them says that the .txt files holding the addresses shld not be help in the public HTML directory, which makes perfect sense; but when I put them in the cgi-shl directory I keep getting "file cannot be found" errors, despite setting all file permissions accordingly. I know you can write to the cgi-shl directory, as my forum software works fine, and that is all held in the cgi directory.

The script should ideally be free, fully customisable and support multiple lists.

It does indeed - and now I've sorted it, I'm going to try a more complicated version! I'm a glutton for punishment, me!

Sure - http://www.robplanet.com/cgi/robmail/

The ones I'm going to try now are ELists and ListMerge from http://www.dtp-aus.com/cgiscript/lmrgscpt.shtml

cjh - you're a bloody star! Thanks for that - I didn't realise you could actually access files outside of the two main directories. Just have to use the full path - e.g. /freeola/users etc. etc.

Thanks again!

Regarding the .txt file in the cgi-shi folder, try creating another folder in the Main Directory, (i.e. NOT in the htdocs or cgi-shi folder) just call it 'files' or something and try running it from there, as that way works fine on Scripts that I use to access .txt files.
