The key to a hero's success is the person that helps them at a regualar interval, some of them are called sidekicks but others aren't because they are so popular or useful they actually become a hero themselves. Some have even been given their own games.
I've decided to start on a person who actually was never a sidekick but played a lesser role in games,he first appearred in a game with his brother rescuing the princess. This person is an italian plumber called Luigi. He first appeared ages ago (I don't know when) and was very popular then.He has many fans all eargerly awaiting for his next game when he goes alone, most of the time to save Mario.
He really came into his own when he got his own kart in Mario Kart,he was an all rounder with his brother but he could go head-to-head with Mario and other popular Mario characters. He was a secret character in Super Smash Bros, this proved how popular he was.He isn't exactly a sidekick because he normally goes it alone,I'd say that he is a hero in himself and I hope that most will agree.
Now I'm going to talk about two very different fairies but they both accompanied Link on quests.I only know the name of one and she's called Navi the other one was originally a fairy for a skull kid possessed by a mask,I think her name is Tatel, this fairy was separated from her brother when Skull Kid stole Epona.
Both of these fairies that accompanied Link gave him advice to help him out of situations.Navi was nicer, she would always say 'Whats up' or 'Hey' to get his attention and then she'd say 'You can do this....' but Tatel would always say 'Can't you work it out?'.This type of sidekick was also very helpful as it was the knowledge that helped (z-targeting helped to target but that was a bit annoying as it'd change).
The third type of sidekick is the type that uses magic or teaches you moves to beat the boss at the end.I'm talking about people like Mumbo Jumbo,Bottles the mole and his brother Jamjars.Bottles was the first to help out in Banjo-Kazzoie by teaching the camrea view, jumping, climbing, swimming and built the bridge to Gruntilda's lair.Bottles helped throughout the game by teaching simple but effective moves.
Mumbo Jumbo came into the helping sidekick way in Banjo-Tooie,he ventured out of his skull and he was an active sidekick.Mumbo casted spells on objects to help Banjo and Kazooie in their second adventure.Jamjars came along when Bottles met his maker....then came back from the dead.He taught more advanced moves to Banjo and Kazooie,he even taught them how to split up and go off on their own.
Then there's the cute, adorable sidekicks who help in a way that the hero can't,there's a type of these sidekicks called Gobbos and they helped Croc in Croc 2,they used their small size to help Croc find his parents and kill Baron Dante. Not much can be said about these apart from their cute fuzziness.
So from my years in gaming I have learnt that there are different types of sidekicks:The v.popular sidekick who was never a sidekick in the first place but had a lesser role in their first few games so I count them as a sidekick.
The active sidekick who you can control alone to help the hero in their quest.
The full of knowledge sidekick that is smart enough to help heros out by using their brains.
The cute fuzzy small sweet and not as helpful as others because they're weaker then others sidekicks.
To end this topic I shall say what I think about this:A sidekick is there to help and most of them are so good they can have their own games if they wanted to,we learn this from Luigi's popularity.Sometimes the sidekick can be more popular then the hero themselves.
I'm deciding to end this now and I know it's bad but it's the best I tried.
Bye.
If you did then it's a pretty good topic, well done.
I'll read it later. At least it's not such an eyesore now :-)
Hide me from the blocks, they are going to eat whats left of my brain!
Ok panic over, sorry about that people
