Maybe it's a longshot, but I'd like to at least attempt to help some of you ill-mannered cretins increase your meagre vocabularies. Therefore, every Monday for a while, I will be posting a "new" word for you to learn and integrate into your everyday existance.

This week's word is....

Opprobium.

Full dictionary definition:

op·pro·bri·um
n.
Disgrace arising from exceedingly shameful conduct; ignominy.
Scornful reproach or contempt: a term of opprobrium.
A cause of shame or disgrace.

So, use in place of the word "disgrace" where the person involved has done something of which they should be ashamed.

For example, if America decided to invade Iraq without first getting the UN inspectors to search for WOMD, then they would incur global opprobium for their actions.

I look forward to seeing you feeble minded cretins put your underutilised brains into a forward gear in efforts to find appropriate uses for this word.

"IT'S AN OPPROBIUM!!!" - as former-Blackburn manager Roy Hodgson used to shout.

(If you've been watching Soccer AM for the last few years, you'll understand)

Here's one for you, IB. You probably know it, though...

Circumlocution

1.The use of unnecessarily wordy and indirect language.
2.Evasion in speech or writing.
3.A roundabout expression.

By his ill-informed, misleading and plagiarised fanboyism relating to the PS2, Top Score invokes universal opprobium from other esteemed SR members.

And there was me thinking opprobium was a radioactive element used in alien abductions.

Not completely worthy of reproach, I suppose. Just have to wait and see what you come up with when you're not necessarilly prompted, or making things up.

When Ricardo garrotted his P.E teacher, he was subjected to opprobium from his parents for his careless actions.
