I'll welcome a blast on the NES, SNES or Megadrive anyday!
1) Streets of Rage
Anyone who had a Megadrive knows about this game and better yet, if they actually played it they will instantly understand why I acclaim it so. This was one of those games that attracted addiction and was always the top contender when undecided of what game to play. Your motive was to simply get rid of badly behaved crooks on the streets. Its baseline gave you four characters each containing a different fighting style including a special more effective attack, dangerous street-type locations (to obviously fit in with the moral of the game), weapons to pick up on the way and a very addictive style of linear progression. Once play begins, you'll hear the glorious sound of in-fitting "I wanna whoop some asss!" music, witness some quite substantial visuals and notice how comfortable the control and fighting systems are. The game does get incredibly difficult after a while, but this only makes it more impressive, giving a greater challenge. But what I really like about the game is the connection between my character's fists(feet whatever) whacking against the body of those oh-so-annoying opponents. They're just those sort of people that you would love to hit! It suits the game superbly! Yes, it does typically have end of level bosses, but this in itself is great fun as well, displaying the meanest, most chunky looking gangsta type fighters I've ever seen in a game, and the action is also pleasing here. However, the game isn't completely flawless; the characters move up and down side to side a bit sluggishly, which is a bit annoying when trying to escape a sticky situation and the game is very repetitive. But in small doses it's a charm and even when you get bored of it after a certain amount of time, it's one of those games you enjoy coming back to.
2) Super Mario
The amount of frequent times I spent on the SNES because of this game is quite worrying. It had linear progression in the most appealing way, mainly due to its incredibly fun and addictive gameplay. You remember Super Mario don't you? The storyline was the very typical "..save the Princess!" material, but thank God the gameplay made up for it. It was a 2D world game where you could jump of platforms, fly, grow, receive shooting powers, enter underground levels, collect coins, be invincible, go underwater, jump on turtles and other irritating creatures...the lot! There was so much that gave this game strength and I must say, the SNES's two button pad fitted the game quite perfectly. The whole atmosphere of the game is creditable in the way it always gave a lively touch during play with thanks to its nice and colourful graphics as well as polyphonic music tones. This game was and still is an adorable classic filled with variation.
3) Street Fighter 2
Since this version, there has been Alpha, Ex plus Alpha, EX3 and so forth, as well as a quite terrible movie inquisition, but nevertheless, outstretched all around the globe Street Fighter 2 is truly a classic, I mean everyone had it! What I think made this game so successful was how detailed it appeared at such a time - spectators moving about in the background, flash fighting effects and so on. All the different styled characters had their own fighting locations as well as brief autobiographies to cover for the game's motive, which credited the game quite a lot. The gameplay demanded some skill, especially for meeting Byson (the boss) and the character appearances and moves were quite impressive. It was always best played with companions, especially when you pull out special 'Sonic booms' 'Ryukens' and all the other trademark attacks. The graphics were very good and ther gameplay was even better, what more could you ask for?

Now is the next generation (apparently), but does this guarantee next-gen titles a spot as being the best of the best? Time to find out...(with extra cheese on top)
1) GTA3
An obvious choice, not because I am a PS2 fanboy extraordinaire, but because this simply was a breathtaking game. What surprised most people was the way Grand theft Auto transformed itself so greatly. From shoddy graphics and average gameplay to sheer brilliance in every sense of the word. The amount of realism the game displayed from an instant was served well by adorable graphics, which for once didn't appear rushed. Then came the detail - being able to perform drive-bys, enter any vehicle in sight, buy your own weapons, live in different areas - this game gave freedom at an astonishing amount. That was what really shocked everyone. The game's bad-asss behaviour is great, taking the role of a well-paid gangsta, going on incredibly violent rampages, stealing cars...I could go on! Ultimately a superb game, which I'm sure will always be remembered.
2) Mario Party 4
Please play this game before judging me as a childish, lunaticral loser. If you already have, I can tell you that I was once like that, until I played it, and to be honest it revived the old days when gaming was a lot more fun. How's this for an idea; you create a board game game, with all the Nintendo greats (Mario, Luigi etc), place them in a hugely competitive and enjoyable world and plant loads of mini-games in. This is Mario Party 4. It's simply a game packed with all the ingredients needed for any type of multiplay fanatic to enjoy, which is friendly competition, variety in play and basically lots and lots of fantastic mini-games! It's almost beyond me how the creators came up with such fantastic snippets of play and with so many. It's like they compiled all the most loved online games, improved on them and shoved them in with perfection. I love it, you'll love it, undoubtedly.
3) Halo
Stop jumping around all you Xbox bumboys, you knew this game had to be here. It's a very rare specimen of game - a launch title that received so much praise! Normally we get crappy rushed out material that plays worse than Pong only it's got flashy graphics. But not with Halo. This game came with a brilliant futuristic storyline, stunning visuals and totally fulfilling moments of play. For a First Person Shooter, it's certainly very impressive. There's never any slowdown during play, objectives are enjoyable and at times very intense, which many are very thankful for because without it the game wouldn't maintain such a unique and creditable atmosphere. The way you progress is one of the game's main highlights, upgrading to better weapons and encountering meaner alien-like creatures, but simply it's the controls that are most impressive. They're very adaptable for such a larger than usual controller and mixed with the game's gameplay, you cannot diss this game. Some see it as the greatest game ever made, but I'm they'll be changing their minds to Halo 2.
That, my friends, is the best of the best. Feel free to raise your own opinion to outsmart mine, but I'm sure most will be satisfied with the lot I have chosen..or so I hope anyway.
Hope you enjoyed that!
