It can't really be taken seriously because most of society see it as a toy, and nothing more. 'Something to shut up the kids' would be one way of describing it. But slowly, it has been accepted more and more; with Sony spending a lot on television advertisement, GameCube's, PS2's and XBox's have become household names.
Of course in some in some households they already were, but it's become more globally acceptable.
But something we do need is a good computer games programme. What have we seen of recent? The dire Lan Jam, which just gave most people the impression that gaming was for idiots. It included the most retarded reviews ever seen and little real information. It lacked something; gamers. All it had were two computer generated idiots who were possible the most annoying things in existence, and a presenter that knew more about rocket science than games, which, for those who don't know, isn't very much at all. Not only did it make me annoyed because it was the closest thing to a games programme and there were nothing more than a few screenshots and videos to quench a gamers thirst. Even worse, those who didn't know about games got the impression that everything games related was as annoying and retarded as the programme.
The only other programme is Cybernet. How much better is that though? Well, a lot, but still, that's not too good. The reviews are far too brief and, again, the only reason to watch the reviews are for the videos. But Cybernet does contain information on the games. For many of us, this isn't enough, though. It doesn't give you alternatives to buy and the presenter is highly annoying.
So, what do we need? We need a good games programme. Remember Thumb Bandits? It may not have been everyone’s first choice, but it did have presenters who knew what they were talking about and the reviews made sense. Channel 4 seems to have always made pretty good games programmes. But there is still a problem, they're on at about 11 and don't stay on for too long.
We do need a good programme, on at a decent time, but will we ever see one? Let's hope so, with a games programme already been on at prime time (ish) there could be a good one appearing soon.

> Never heard of it, it also has a rubbish name.
It's exactly what you described as your perfect programme.
With Violet Berlin - The chest from, er, England.
Catch at around...3am sometime.
But I don't suppose either of you have ever seen it.
I caught Lan Jam one day and laughed at how poor it was. Gamesmaster was alright I guess as it actually had some decent content. There was also one on Sky one years ago where contestants played a game and the one with the most points then bet some points against the shows own gamers such as Big boy Barry. Was an ok show but slowly died out and disapeared.
Fact is though even if there were great shows out these the audience is still fixed to those who actually enjoy gaming. The number of new people it would introduce to gaming would be minimal.
To the big names like Sony, Nintendo etc the internet is the easier option and probably more cost effective.
Saying that though I would like to see a good show on the tv, not just one that points out good up and comming games, gives cheats etc but also one that talks to developers and gives those interested in gaming a look into exactly how much effort goes into a game and how they are made.
That would my idea of a good gaming show.
