My first real problem with Windows XP...

I was notified of an 'Critical Update' today by WinXP, and downloaded it. When it started to install, it hung. Thinking nothing more of it, I ended the task, and when to the Windows Update site to download it manually... only it hangs before it starts checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software.

So, I've searched the Knowledge Base, and it offered this solution:

http://support.microsoft.com /default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;812956

(Method 4 - manual download and install)

And I still have the same problem!

Anyone offer a solution? I had this before on WinME, and it was a case of deleting some files from a system directory, and it worked fine after that - but I don't know abuot WinXP.

True! But to be honest, this is the first real problem I've had with XP - far better than previous versions. My last problem - a seemingly random reboot of the PC - I know now was due to a failing HD.

In fact, the reason I forgot about System Restore before I made the initial post was that XP has been SO reliable that I forgot all about it!

Windows Restore...heh.

You've got to love it when Microsoft realise how unreliable their own software is.

I took the easy way out - I used the System Restore function of XP to take the machine back to about 3 days ago, and it's sorted the problem.

It means I need to re-install some software, but I'd rather do that than do the whole system again. Only just finished doing that after a HD failure!

I had a similar (although not identical, by the sounds of it) problem with Windows Update scanning, but freezing at 0%.

The workaround for this suggested:

Tools>Internet Options>Connections>Lan Settings>Turn off "Automatically detect settings", and "Use Automatic Configuration Script"

For me, this was something to do with Webwasher, and worked as soon as I did the above. I don't know if it will be the same for you...
