The graphics in games started to flow when the Nintendo Entertainment System, known to many as the NES, was released. I was so eager to have this stunning machine. Well, it was stunning at the time, but then again, there’s always something new coming out that completely revolutionises the industry. When the NES was hatched, I was just a youngster. I must have been around, I don’t know…say maybe, 9…10 years old. The Nintendo then, was something that nobody had ever seen before in his or her entire life. I even remember the price of the games. They started at £40 to around £50. It was a dream to find a game at a slightly lower price back then. The NES was only an 8-bit machine, but I didn’t know better at the time, so I pleaded with my parents to buy it for me. I was moaning in the store, crying at home, begging for them to agree. I finally got what I wanted. I did enjoy playing on it, but then the Megadrive was born. Now, I do not come from a wealthy family, but because my parents love me so much, and of course, I am sure it’s the same for all of you, too, however…I became miserable again. I wanted the Megadrive so badly. My parents told me, “Son, you have a Nintendo. Now you want a Megadrive, too? It’s out of the question”, (or something like that, anyway).
As you might have guessed…I started moaning once again, then I cried in the store, nagging in anticipation to have it. I know what you’re all thinking, “Spoilt little brat”. Well…I don’t blame you one bit. But I’m not necessarily. You see, my two older brothers know nothing about the gaming industry, and I just have this thing inside me that knows almost everything about it. I guess you could say that I am the first in the family to like videogames, and it’s true…I am. I was probably born with it. I read the magazines everyday; I search for the latest news on the Internet, and not to mention, spending most of my time over here, at GAD. But, there’s absolutely no way that I am spoilt, or a little brat, because I don’t have many friends. I was only nine at the time, so you can’t really blame anyone for moaning if they never had a console. Just because I had the NES and the Megadrive given to me, doesn’t mean that I always get what I want. It takes a very long time for me to get something, especially something like a videogames system. You see…my whole family is more than willing to buy me whatever I want, providing it’s something I need in life, and not a games console. But I don’t have many friends, in fact, I hardly have any friends at all, so that’s why I was given those things. It keeps me occupied, and if I prove to my parents that I am studying hard enough to be worthy of having a videogames system, then I sure that if they are proud of me, I can be proud of myself, and also feel happy when playing my games. I don’t go out and I have no part-time job because I am studying, so this is what I do in my spare time.
When Sony launched the PlayStation, I had obviously matured a little, so I was not too worried about owning one or not. Besides, my older brother bought a second hand PlayStation from a friend, with around 14 (TERRIBLE) games, but anyways, it was fun while it lasted.
When the Dreamcast arrived to the console industry, I could hardly care. Not that I didn’t like the console…it’s just that I always knew that something better would arrive, beating all the rest. The PlayStation 2 was that console. When Sony’s new machine came out, I was navigating the Net, searching for the latest game footage of SSX, TimeSplitters, and of course…Tekken Tag Tournament. It was like a dream to see Sony launching a 128-bit machine. And as I already mentioned earlier; the Dreamcast…even though it’s a 128-bit console as well…by the time I had thought of buying one, I heard of the PS2, where I turned my head a complete 360 degrees. I saved my money, my parents helped me out as well, and sooner than I could realise…it was PlayStation 2 heaven.
The weekend I had spent, playing the games on my new machine, was the most fabulous and exciting weekend I have had in a long time. The PS2 is the first console I had owned since the age of eleven. Now that I am eighteen, things have changes quite a bit.
As for the XBOX and the Gamecube…I doubt I will be getting them at all. Okay…maybe I will, but only if I can afford it (obviously). I certainly won’t haste into buying one, since many companies, including Special Reserve will be holding some great package deals for them, a while after they are released.
