Frequency. Fantavision. Jak and Daxter. Sly Racoon. Halo. Splinter Cell.

Innovation isn't quite as scarce nowadays. With Cash Cow franchises backing most risky new projects right up to the hilt with plenty of green, developers, or moreso publishers (who are blatantly milking their best franchises) are more willing to take risks, regardless of rising development costs.

Okay, so the above titles may, in some cases, have taken their inspiration from other games, but the amount they've attributed to their genre is quite notable. Take Frequency. It can't really have stolen anything from Rez, because the fact that it's to do with music is just down to the Genre it's in. You don't really shoot... you aren't really a character, let alone a humanoid, in fact... the only thing similar in the two games is the fact that you go forward!

J&D and Sly are both platformers, and collecting gold coins was 'In' way back in 1989, but the lack of loading screens, cel-shaded graphics and various weapons and how they work, all add extra to the games attributes.

Granted, none of them are quite Super Mario, but you can't really say Nintendo innovate... more that Shigeru Miahoweveryouspellit innovates. And hey, no-one knows that he didn't get the inspitarion from his Dad, or cousin, or wife, or 7 girlfriends. I'm not questioning his talent, or authenticity, i'm merely saying, the source on innovation isn't really the river mouth it's the source. Volvic, Evian, Vittel... and all that.

Nowadays, high quality graphics are easier to get out of the development kits, than yesterdays curry is to get out of... well, you know what I mean; And because of this developers can get their view across much more easily, and they can portray what they want to show much easier and much more accurately. Plus, look at the state of the industry... we're booming! It's not like developers are unsure whether it'll take off, they no longer have to release a franchised game or a sequel sports title.

Innovation is within the reach of almost any developer nowadays, you've just got to find the right mind. Achieving your goal isn't the problem, but finding your goal is.
