THE GOOD:

Sony's PS2 finally silences critics over it's lack of Triple A class games, with the arrival of such games as GT3, GTA3 and DMC.

Nintendo releases the Gamecube in Japan and America. The prospects for the console look good, and with games like Zelda on the way, the future could be very bright indeed!

Microsoft enter the console market with the Xbox, and completely blow away critisism with their launch titles. The console boasts to be the first that will have true internet gaming- something never realised on the DC.

THE BAD:

As Sega post a third year of losses, they finally admit defeat in the hardware sector- leaving the area for the forseeable future. The Dreamcast, dispite bing a great console by all means, dies a painful death.

Nintendo's European fans are disapointed as the launch of the Gamecube is finally announced to be AFTER Christmas, promptine serious critisism of Nintendo's attitude towards the continent.

PC gaming once again looks on the way out as Peter Molyneux, head of Lionhead, makes a key note speach on the subject at the "Develop" conference of European developers.

THE WEIRD:

Cell-shading, a graphical technique created by Smilebit, begins to gain more ground after being announced as the prefered style for the new Zelda game... all at a time when the industry is trying to make games more realistic!

Capcom, after announcing the PS2 to be far superior to the GC, take a dramatic U-turn and announce it to be their favoured platform, with the Resident Evil Series to have a huge remake!

The Xbox manages to be king of consoles.... in size at least! You just wonder what tools MS has implanted inside the black case... maybe they can see you through the big green "eye" of the machine?

My take on this:

THE GOOD:

The PS2 outshines everything with some top class games and a much better price towards the end of the year.

Sega start releasing games on multi-format consoles and one becomes one of the best Gamecube launch games.

Dreamcast becomes really cheap and this means major sales, keeping the second hand games market open for Dreamcast games for ages to come.

Nintendo show the world the excellent Gamecube. They keep their promise to the cost too.

Microsoft's Xbox gets excellent reviews in Edge for Halo and is considered a major player in the console market at last.

Gameboy Advance wows more and more UK audiences as the titles go from strength to strength on the handheld that thinks its a proper console.

While all other games designers are seemingly making realistic games, occasionally making them more boring, Nintendo doesn't follow the herd and dares to be different, making Zelda look fresh and new.

THE BAD:

Dreamcast dies for good, it seems, with only a handful of games making it to the shelves, even though half of them were some of the console's best so far.

The next Wipeout game and Metal Gear Solid 2 are both pushed back further in Europe. Booo!

THE WEIRD:

The rebranding of games with the Atari logo does not create a new Atari console.

Cheers Sonic, have a good new year!

No, you can't see through the green eye of the Xbox because it's cardboard. True.
