Ok, I'd like a bit of debate here.

It'll Probably not materialise but heck, its worth a try.
Im looking to know of 'opinions' regarding Warner Bros' the Lord of the Rings, by Ralph Bakshi.
Some say its a mixed bag, others really not so keen. And those like myself think It is a great classic.
So what do you think?

Ive included my own review below for those who'd like to know my thoughts.

I just couldn't believe it, when I heard the news that Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings adaptation would make it to DVD.
It really was like a dream come true. After all the so many years of waiting and waiting for the Cult animation to make it onto tape, finally we have it in DIGITAL form-DVD! with Widescreen and Dolby surround to boot-...fantastic Warner Bros!!.

Anyway, I am a big Lord of the Rings freak. You know,... one of those people that can recite things from the book as if it's a religion and I have to say Ralph Bakshi's adaptation is truly Excellent and indeed a wonderful 'version' to the epic saga.

Being a 1979 Film and considering I wasn't born then, I will always remember seeing this film on TV sometime in the late 80's and ever since then, It disappeared forever! until now that is.
This version of the Lord of the Rings is very dark, very dramatic and atmospheric. It blends Animation with shaded live action sequences seamlessly with full impressive effects, one minute your watching Frodo and the Fellowship trundling along or being chased in splendid 'Cartoon' animation, then all of a sudden the frames change to a realistic look which I might add, works brilliantly.

The interpretaions of the Hobbit's are well executed and fit the descriptions in the Book. Gandalf the Wizard looks what He Is supposed to look like too, as do Saruman (Armuman in parts of this film version to take confusion away from Sauron) and even Gollum my favourite charcter is witnessed being the 'Sneak' that he is. It really Is fantastic.
The Only gripe that I had was that Ralph Bakshi never secured enough funding from his bosses to make the rest of the story in a second part, being half of the 'Two Towers' of the book and 'The Return of the King'.
However don't let that put you off, It Is a great example of a masterpiece of Its time and certainly deserves all praises for what it set out to achieve- being an 'interpretation' of Tolkiens world. Basically thats really what you should look upon it as- an 'Interpretation', one man's view on the greatest story of all time. It might not have been 'Your' interpretation when you read the books(It wasn't mine) and It never bettered the books- but you have to appreciate other peoples and especially the means and technology 'at that time' in which Baskshi brought 'his' Interpretaion to life.
Dark, mysterious and grippingly exciting. It might not end up being as good as the Live action films from New Line, but it was the first to try and bring Middle Earth to life and with that I commend it highly.
A Classic, just like the Books.

You may well look for an arguement and I know many that would tell you where you could shove the film, but you won't get any arguement from me. Although the animation is basic by today's standards, the film itself is worth watching for its scale and the feelings it manages to portray when telling what is a long and sometimes difficult tale to tell on film.

This is one of those DVDs that I'm just going to have to get. My brother got this for Christmas in a lovely box set with a book about the making of the film and a large poster. Nice.
