While going for big air and trying to do some kind of trick, yet failing, I've realised how many times this kind of thing has been done before. I'm not talking about SSX Tricky being unoriginal, not at all, infact it is pretty original being so whacky and all. The kind of thing I'm talking about are Extreme Sports games, a genre which over the past two years has expanded more then ever due to successes with the Tony Hawks series being one example.
As I look up on my GameCube collection right now I have:
SSX Tricky
Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer
MX Superfly
Tony Hawks 4
&
Wave Race: Blue Storm
Some may argue that last one isn't an Extreme Sports game but it is really, isn't it.
Now, I don't call myself a fan of Extreme Sports, nope. I don't Snowboard, I don't Surf, I don't do Motorbikes, I don't Skateboard and I don't Jet-Ski. So what the hell has attracted me to buy these games?
Maybe it's because I haven't even had the chance to do any of them ni real life before? Apart from Skateboarding that is, but can I do anything the characters in the game can? No. I can't even ollie and I bet most of you can't either going by evidence of friends and the video of Mr Snuggly's attempts.
Hold on, am I seeing another 1-0 to games here?
I think so.
What other form of entertainment sticks you in the shoes of a Jet-Skier without getting your feet wet?
Play Skateboarding better then you ever could and take away the risk of cracking your back open.
Play Snowboard games and take away the risk of breaking your leg.
It's all these little things that make Video games the best form of entertainment out there, with added fun.
And if you fancy doing this stuff in real life then video games have just given you more exprience, that is until you do actually realise you'll never be able to do any Extreme Sports you big Geek.
Ho hum.
Anyway, Tony Hawks games are old school in the fact you need to just hammer the pad and clock up as many points as you can.
I dance on the Mat. Well, step...
Knock up big combo's to Hit Me Baby One More time. Oh yes, turns me on so much I get a lump in my pants exactly when I get a 86 step combo.
You might as well just buy Britney's dance beat, a wee dance mat and get it out of your system.
"Wooo look at me, I can do big stunts/britney dance steps"
Pah!
I couldn't buy Tony Hawks 1, 2, 3 and 4 but stuff like Tricky is good. It puts new things into a tired genre which may be overused prehaps.
Because you like to play boring repetitive toss?
