I propose that there are many different types of gamer, and here are my categories… If you can think of any more, by all means, post them in here.
1) Pokemon Gamer – Oh yes, you don’t think those kiddies are gamers, but they are, just at an early stage of development. Fervent, devoted fans of their playthings, they must have every bit of consumer merchandise that they can involving the creatures. This craze will die out, but will be replaced by another, see also, Power Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, etc, etc. This gamer may or may not own a console, PC, or variation of Gameboy, but it is a fair bet, they will, eventually.
2)Indifferent Gamer – AKA “casual” gamer. This type of gamer may own either a PC, or a console, maybe even both. The casual gamer does not care how a game works, or how many polygons the CPU of their machine can throw at the screen, they just care about having a good time. They probably own, WWTBAM, or Simpsons Wrestling, maybe a version of GT. They may have a wide selection of games, but they may not be good ones. These guys don’t buy mags like Edge, they probably buy a format specific mag. All indifferent gamers can evolve into other types of gamer…
3) Console Gamer – Probably young and at school, doesn’t have a PC. Has one or more consoles under the TV. Takes every opportunity to spout on about how new consoles are easy to use and play, and are cheap, yet pays around £40 for a game. Tells the world that the PC is a dated technology and will die as a games platform, whilst secretly admiring the advances in power that the PC makes every 2-3 months.
4) PC Gamer – Probably has a job or rich parents as they can afford a PC. Has a good PC, but has to keep upgrading to the newest graphics / memery / processor, so is usually broke. Takes every opportunity to tell the world how inferior consoles are, yet is jealous that they don’t need the Operating System reinstalled every six months, and wishes that PCs would drop in price.
5) Zealot – Can mostly be divided into Sony / Sega / Nintendo / Xbox sub-types, but there are many variations such as Unreal Tournament / Quake / Half Life zealots. These gamers do not care about hardware, because they just want to play their favourite games, no matter what platform. Consequently, they support the old adage “software before hardware”.
6) Prosumer Gamer – is a “professional consumer”, ie, they like the game so much, they will build new levels for it (say UT or Quake), or will design new objects to use in the game, (say, GTA on the PC). These gamers probably run websites to support the community they choose to become a part of.
You can also get gamer crossbreeds as well, so you might see a PC Gamer who is also a Prosumer of Unreal Tournament of which he is a Zealot.
That probably is not an exhaustive list, but you get the picture.
