Was helping out a friend with some computer problems a few weeks back. In the end I had to get a new hard drive for them and re-install windows and their programs and files. Went through gettting all the recent windows updates and updated drivers.

Noticed that the windows firewall was switched off but there is no option to switch it on, the panel is greyed out and you can't choose any of the options. Have made sure the user has administrator privilages but still no joy. There is no other firewall software on the PC.

Anyone know what could be causing it or how to switch it on?

From that it sounds like they are running XP Pro rather than Home; things are different with Pro.

Run gpedit.msc to access the Group Policy settings.
More here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/abouttn/subscriptions/flash/tips/tips_083105.mspx

If they don't have any luck poking about with gpedit, then knowing the EXACT message they received would be good...

After doing a bit more reading, if they're running XP Home edition and are seeing a Group Policy message then this could be down to some malicious s/w!

Installed windows on a new drive and formatted that before installing windows. Got them to copy over the files they needed from their old drive and had them format that one too.

They mentioned something the other day about it mentioning something about a group policy on the firewall control panel.

E-mailed them telling them to run their spyware and anti-virus programs incase there is something nasty on their PC.

Cheers for the help so far.

It sounds like you either have a non-Windows firewall which is trying to take control - as there should only ever be one firewall active; or there is something malicious turning it off!

When you installed Windows did you reformat the drive as well?
If not then you'll still have all sorts of software still on the PC...

Got them to check that Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) was running and it was, they restarted it just to be sure, they also did the same with the security centre service and made sure both started automatically. After this the firewall settings became active and the firewall was set to on.

After a couple of minutes though it switched itself off and the settings became 'greyed' out again.

As you've done a clean install this is a bit strange, but this may help:

Check to see if the Windows Service "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" is running.

You can display the Windows Services by running the command services.msc (Start > Run > services.msc)

If it's in the list but isn't running start it - then try looking at the Windows Firewall from the Control Panel.

I've seen problems before when it's not listed in the available Services. Performing a Windows Repair etc. didn't change the situation. I ended up using the Registry 'hack' successfully from this site http://windowsxp.mvps.org/sharedaccess.htm.

Let us know how you get on...
