With games undoubtly getting better and better all the time, does this mean that games have to really look and sound brilliant?
Granted from a consumer point of view, you should raise such high standards due to the technology that is now available. But does a games greatness soley depend on the quality? Would you purchse a game with the gameplay and storyline in mind rather than the graphics and presentation?

3 years ago most people were playing their Playstation 1. That was only in the year 2000. If you are a PS2 owner and you started playing a typical PS1 game then your eyes would start squinting. If you think to yourself how much your standards have been raised over the last couple of years; we were enthralled in games like Metal Gear Solid and Grand Theft Auto. Granted at the time these games were enjoyable and eye opening. Compare that feeling to first turning on a PS2 and playing a game like Vice City. The comparison is astounding in technical terms but they amazed us at the same kind of level, unaware of how different they look to each other.

I'm not saying every game on the PS1 is not still popular, take a series of games like Final Fantasy for instance. I know of people who own all three Next-Gen consoles and still play on Final Fantasy 7. I think that if FF7 was released now on the PS2 with the same graphics and all, then gamers would probably not buy it regardless of its fantastic storyline, long last appeal and its gameplay. Final Fantasy X on the other hand has absolutly dazzling graphics and lasts long. Most people prefer FF7 to FFX even wih its PS1 graphics. And rightly so. This point stands up for the games which are not all there in the looks department but really has a good go with its gameplay and plot.

Magazines too have expected alot more of games over the years. If a game of such retrospective brilliance like Metal Gear Solid was released now instead of then, it too would not be as highly rated.

But in a few years even the games of today will be fround upon. Now that concept is extremely hard to process. With the limits of the PS2 not even near its technical potential and the online feature not released in Europe yet, then you could say standards will continue to sky rocket. I'm not saying having high expectations is bad, i'm just saying that raising them too high will ultimately have an effect on your gaming experience. Not all games will meet your standards and you will left unfufilled on the gaming front at least
