on my new comp it was all working fine till one day when i turned it on i got the *grim reaper* of the computer world, what no not Bill Gates that blue screen.

It says VXD error (you know the usual rubbish with a load of meaningless text) but when i press a key i get another and another till it freezes.

ok i thought i'll re-install windows which i did and it all worked fine got all the software loaded back then it came back ok i'll try a diffrent version of windows.

anyway to cut it short i tried win 98, win 98SE and win ME and it's the same thing.

So i tried it with no hardware plugged in except a graphics card and turned it on. while it was installing win 98 it all went ok till it was starting windows for the first time then it came back ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

anyway a few months back i was taking a floppy drive out and as the ram is hard to get in and out the slots i kinda gave both DDR sims a good raming with the floppy drive one is dead but the other seems to detect but i was wondering if something could be wrong with it.

Could a damaged DDR sim cause a VXD error?

my system spec is

1.4Ghz AMDS athlon
Geforce 2 GTS 32mb DDR
256mb ram (was 512 but it died remember)
IBM deskstar 40gig 7200rpm HD
Pioneer DVD drive (re firmwared aopen to make multi region but works fine)
Philips CDRW 800 series (i think)
Gigabyte motherboard with dual bios (forget model name)
400watt PSU

i would list the other hardware cards but there not important as it happens if there in it or not.

thanx if you can help at all i'm normaly a wiz on comps but this baffles me, i'm gunna try a new DDR sim sunday hopefully anyway so i'll let you know what happens.

I had VXD-type errors, coupled with the Blue Screen Of Death on my Win 3.11 machine, that turned out to be faulty memory. I had had the machine less than a year and had never opened it up.

For what its worth, I had "vxd" errors (among others) some time back when the CPU was overheating. So if it was me, I'd be checking that the fan was still humming. But then you could be right ... dodgy memory could be just as likely.

As far as I understand, vxd files are dynamic drivers loaded when they need to be, eg:

./windows/system/3dfxvs.vxd
./windows/sysbckup/dsound.vxd

Some of your hardware could be segfaulting them but I doubt it, I'd say it's more of a problem with a vxd FOR some of your hardware.

Try re-installing with JUST your CD-ROM and floppy installed, and then remove them. That leaves you with your keyboard and mouse, which should be PS/2. See if you get any errors then.

If you don't, then gradually installed bits of your box so you can determine what's causing the problem.

But...

I'm often wrong on this type of thing. You'd better wait for Phil or Andi to have a look at it as well.
