So, like every other company in this world of ours, Advertising is the way to rake in the customers and the moolah. Advertising comes in many forms, in magazines (no, not "those" ones, you dirty monkeys...) on television, billboards, bus stops.... the list goes on. Over the past year, we've seen advertisements from Microsoft, Sony, Game producers ect. Then there is a company called Nintendo, that’s a different story...
Don't get me wrong, But Nintendo are one hell of a fantastic company, that make great fun and innotiative titles that other games have had the inspiration from. We've seen Nintendo battling it out with Sega, but they all ways reigned supreme when it came to games. So what’s happened now? Surely Nintendo should be up at that number one spot in sales shouldn’t they? Well, yes they should, but there again Nintendo seem quite lazy, they need to get off their backside and actually do something about it. Over the Christmas holidays, did anyone actually see any Nintendo promotion? I didn’t, maybe the odd Mario Sunshine sticker on a phone box, but that’s it. So what the hell are Nintendo doing?
Nintendo's reluctance to advertise is quite worrying, even GAME stores plaster their walls with large Xbox and PS2 adverts. Well, the main subject of this post is a rant about an advert I saw last night regarding Resident Evil Zero...
The advert is of a small little baby in its cot and a narrator in the background explaining the things a baby should learn. Then it comes out with something along the lines with "But don't teach it to become an evil scientist who makes a virus that will destroy us all" and then the game footage sets in. Now as many of you know, The Gamecube has been stereotyped as a console for children, when it isn’t. Is this advert Nintendo’s attempt at shaking off the kiddy image? Well it’s a goddamn poor attempt at that. Nintendo needs to feature adverts with teenagers and adults, not little babies in a cot.
Granted, Resident Evil is not a children’s game at all, but still wouldn’t it be better if such fantastic games like Pikmin and Mario Sunshine were advertised? These are top quality games in their own rights, its a shame the gaming community doesn’t know about them, Or just pushes them to one side.
Although I’m a little bit annoyed with Nintendo’s advertising schemes, I'm a happy and proud Gamecube owner and I look forward to playing the likes of Metroid Prime and Mario Kart on my little console.
Thanks for Reading.
The start of the Resi Evil advert looks like some nappy company promotion, Lots of people will just flick the channel...
