It wasn't a particulary 'hard' game but it was highly enjoyable for people of any ages. It was the first time Mario had appeared in 3D, on a game, with great graphics, fully detailed backgrounds, great animations and it was kept as something we'd expect and recognise as a Mario classic! I do not feel that the N64 is complete as an anticipateed Mario 64 sequel has failed to appear in 64 bit.
Having the Mario 64 sequel on the GameCube just won't be the same! The graphics are gunna be better and the controls will be slightly different. How can you link a sequel to it's prequel if the controls are different, affecting the gameplay slightly?? From the clips i've seen of Mario Sunshine, it looks as if it's been set in a different location (outside of the 'Mushroom Kingdom') and that Mario for some reason has a backpack and water gun?? Could this be part of his plumming job or a new abillity he's discovered for defesting his enemies??
Zelda: Ocarina Of Time was another one of Nintendo's big hits on the N64, and it's sequel (Majora's Mask) was also created in the same style, on the N64. A possible follow-on to Maajora's Mask is in development for the GC, possibly in a different style to the N64 versions, including very-dissapointing graphics! You cannot claim that Paper Mario is the sequel to Mario 64, as it's was created by people other than Nintendo and appears in a cartoon-styled 2D effect that works very well. But the N64 needed a full-3D, Nintendo developed, Mario 64 2, with a similar plot. Even if it did involve saving the Princess AGAIN!! And coming face-to-face with Bowser ONCE MORE!! It would still be the right kind of game to follow-on from the masterpiece that was: 'Super Mario 64'.
One thing I found strange about Mario 64 was the fact that it was different from the previous games in the long-lasting Mario series. You could still bash blocks with your head but you recieve a magic cap instead of the old Fire-Flower or Magic Mushroom! Ok, so it may not have been as great if Mario was still shrinking every five minutes, but you surely cannot leave out the awsome Fire-Flower!! This meant Mario had nothing to shoot with, not even a pea-shooter! And instead he had to rely on his good old stomping shoes to get him through. But at least his jumps and acrobatics had improved, for such a 'plump' guy.
I also agree with you about it being with different controls, his back pack and being out of the mushroom kingdom. i would of prefered it to be just like Mario 64, but with different levels. I dont mind about fighting Bowser again.
