It’s been five years since the now Zenimax owned ID Software announced their post-apocalyptic shooter: Rage, and during its long development time have never shut up about the supposedly “revolutionary” graphics and the new ID Tech 5 engine that the game runs on, of course it takes more than words to make a game so now that Rage is actually here it’s time to find out just how good it is, can Rage blow it’s rivals out of the water or will it just crash and burn?

The plot is simple; a massive asteroid dubbed “Apophis” is on a collision course with Earth and when it strikes it’s going to pretty much wipe everything out, to give humanity a second stab at life a select few have been chosen to take refuge in underground shelters called Arks and go into cryogenic stasis until it’s safe to come out, this is where you come into the equation, about a hundred years into the future Rage’s unnamed protagonist is brought out of his icy slumber early to find his Ark heavily damaged and his group long dead leaving him no option but to leave and make a life in the barren wasteland that Earth has become.

Despite civilisation taking a battering some have survived without the use of Arks and built their own ramshackle communities, the world is populated with people from all walks of life ranging from honest folk trying to carve out a living to murderous bandit gangs who’ll happily shoot you on sight for a tin of cat food, in fact almost as soon as you leave the Ark someone tries to take your life only to be shot in the face by a man who quite frankly has the coolest pair of shades ever (they’re green!), this man explains a bit about how things work and drives you to safety, he then hands you a gun and tells you to murder a bunch of bandits to repay his kindness, there's no character creation or tutorial instead the game just throws you in at the deep end.

Combat is where Rage really shines because most enemies are shockingly intelligent and will behave realistically depending on the situation, make constant use of cover and work together to bring you down making it both challenging and satisfying to outwit and destroy them, the selection of weapons on offer aren’t exactly original but they come with a variety of different ammo types and pack a hefty punch, so much so that it’s hard not to feel just a bit sorry for the poor sap you sent flying with a shotgun but that sorrow will soon turn to pure glee when he does a triple backflip mid-flight towards his mates which sends them running in fear, simply put it’s pure carnage from start to finish but upping the chaos factor even further is a variety of brilliant gadgets to use, the most notable of them is the Wingstick: a razor sharp boomerang which homes in on foes and often decapitates them rewarding you with a short pyrotechnic celebration of brain jam.

Vehicles also play a big part, you start off with a rather fragile looking ATV but as the game progresses a few more meaner looking rides will become available, the majority of driving involves travelling across vast expanses to mission objectives and while you’re out and about bandits will often attack relentlessly in their own buggies armed to the teeth with machine guns and rockets, thankfully you can also fit some of your own to fend them off as well as that there are lots of races to complete which reward you with certificates to buy upgrades such as spiked wheels or battering rams to tip the odds further in your favour, mostly ,tearing across the wasteland is fun but there’s one flaw so irritating that deserves a special mention: handling, it’s just far too twitchy, even trying to make a slight turn often results in stacking the vehicle into a boulder which is more than inconvenient when dozens of enemy rockets are hurtling towards you.

When not fighting or crashing into rocks there are two awesome looking hub towns to be visited that have merchants, side missions, races and addictive minigames that you can lose yourself (and your money) in for hours as well as a garage where you can repair and tune your vehicles.

If you're getting tired of the campaign there are two multiplayer modes to jump into, the first is a selection of co-op missions called "Wasteland Legends" in each mission you and one other player must complete a series of objectives and rack up as many points as you can along the way which is done by killing foes creatively and efficiently, each mission is fun and surprisingly addictive but there are only a few and they're over before you know it, the second and by far the weakest mode is Road Rage, where you and a few others fight to the death in your armed buggies which sounds brilliant, too bad then that the messed up vehicle handling pretty much ruins it, ID could have used their vast experience to turn multiplayer into something special but instead it's a hastily bolted on afterthought.

Rage is a good game and entertaining but it had the potential to be brilliant, the game is held back from true greatness by a few unforgivable flaws: the story gets off to a good start but becomes dull very quickly and is over before you even realise it, vehicles are far too twitchy to the point where a slight nudge of the analogue stick results in a crash, and like I mentioned just before the multiplayer is cack but perhaps the worst one of all is the fact that surface textures take an age to load and while they do the game looks like a PS1 launch title, despite all this though there is still a lot of fun to be had and the game is still worth buying for a reduced price, Rage will make a good stocking filler for any FPS fan this Christmas... just as long as they steer clear of multiplayer.

Wonderful...
... and so easy-to-use even for a technophobe like me. I had my website up in a couple of hours. Thank you.
