Tony Hawk and the skateboard spawned a craze, and we've now got the opulent choice of games ranging from the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, to Jet Set Radio, to SSX Tricky, and now variations on the theme (skateboards and terrorists, surfboards, hover boards, hover boards and terrorists, snow boards etc..).

Has anyone NOT got an extreme board game in their gaming collection yet? (No, you can't include the Monopoly that granny gave you for Christmas)

This trend of taking one popular genre and diversifying it with twists could now go onto rhythm games. Basically the aim of the genre is to press buttons and pull triggers on your joypad in time with screen signals, be they visual or audio, to advance in the game.

The most basic example would have to be Space Channel 5 on the Dreamcast, probably the best game in the genre to date would be Samba de Amigo, again on the Dreamcast. You'd have thought that was it, but no, the Japanese passion for all things crazy in gaming is winging its way to these shores.

Dance Dance Revolution on the PSX, Dancing Stage Euromix (PSX again), and now Frequency (PS2) are on their way to us.

So where will it all lead? A first- or third-person shooter where you don't just pull a trigger or hit the x-button to fire, but have to press the appropriate button depending on what kind of baddy is approaching?

An adventure game where you don't move through the environment manually, you're already on the move and have to hit the correct button at the right time to progress?

My guess is that by the end of 2002, you will probably have some sort of rhythm game in your collection, just as at the end of 2001 you probably ended up with some kind of x-treme sports game.

Maybe Tony Hawk's Dance Stage Frequency Boarder is in production as we speak...

~Enter: "Rez" - the next step in the rhythm direction perhaps. Flying, shooting and exploration all interlinked with ingame sound FX and the soundtrack.
