2001 was a great year no doubt about it but one or two things will be happening in 2002 that will be a little different. We will get 2 new games consoles landing on our shores. Gamecube and X-box. X-Box will come first unless Nintendo can make a huge jump and actually GIVE their console a release date before March (Xbox release in UK) Seeing as the GBA was given a date only 2 months before it's actual release, this could actually happen for the GC but is very ..... very unlikely.

In 2002 we will surely see some great games to keep up the tradition. In 2001 we saw Gran Turismo 3, GTA3, Jak & Daxter and Devil May Cry, all of which are great games. There were also GC and X-Box games out in Japan and America and for us to look at. They all looked mighty fine! X-Box had Halo, Project Gotham Racing and Dead or Alive 3 while GC had Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Smash Bros and the stunning Rogue Leader.

GC is looking good in the US so far and Nintendo are hoping to continue it's run of success in 2002. It has already beaten the PS2 record for fastest sell out in one week and with Zelda and Mario coming towards the end of this year it looks like Ninty may just have many fans kept in their place. That is over in the US though. Nintendo are still relctant to give a release date for the UK though yet and games will still be months behind for us following Japan then the USA. The GC launch here is expected between March and April with a pencilled "Spring" release but rumors are floating about that it could be as late as December, showing that Ninty really don't care much about Europe. This may prevent a few people from purchasing a GC.

X-Box meanwhile has confirmed it's UK launch date and is looking to do well over here, whether it will or not is still a question. X-Box have also shown much more enthusiasm towards their console than Ninty. They have given away lots of free X-Boxes to punters so I have heard and have given a good show in New York with The Rock and Bill gates playing consoles with the Microsoft fans. This show was meant to be amazing compared to the pitiful Ninty one, which had it's collection of fans but was nowhere near up to the X-Box one. Ah Bill Gates and his money.

That was the consoles. Now onto games. Sony are looking to do well next year and they will have to get some decent games out if they want to fend off their 2 rivals in the New Year. As every Sony fan should know, Metal Gear Solid 2 will be out in February. MGS2 is looking amazing right now, a contender to best PS2 game so far along with GT3 and GTA3. There will be loads of other PS2 games as well to come out. Wipeout Fusion, Timesplitters 2, Tomb Raider : Next Gen, Final Fantasay 10 and 11 (completely online) and Tekken 4 to name a few. Tekken 4 really is looking good right now but it has the DOA3 on X-Box and Sould Calibur 2 on GC to compete with. We shall see how well it copes. You can expect either and update of Smack Down or maybe Tony Hawk as well. Also GT3.5 the expansion is in development so the future looks good for the PS2 in 2002.

I've talked about a few of the GC games further back but there are still many more that are to be seen on GC. Games like Luigi's Mansion, Super monkey Ball, Pikmin, Smash Bros and Rogue Leader will all be big hits over here but later on in the year more shocks are to come. We will see ISS Gamecube, The Legend of Zelda GC and Mario Sunshine (which should hopefully make a few sales for Ninty of the console and those games.) There will also be some secret introductions from Rare. They have said that out of Perfect Dark Zero Donkey Kong GC, Banjo 3, Killer Instinct GC, Conker andsome Gran Turismo type racing game (just what Ninty need for a racer.) that 2 of those and only 2 of them are in development at the moment. My money is on Perfect Dark and Killer Instinct GC. Somehow I don't see DK or Banjo ready for a release right after the GC launch although I wouldn't out it past Rare with Conker. Mario Kart will also appear on GC in less than a year from now which was a shock to many fans. It has been in devleopment for ages now. It is the game that will fill the waiting gap between Mario Sunshine and Zelda GC.

X-Box has many good games on their way and most of them will be exclusive and never seen before this. Project Gotham Racing is looking great for a racer and Halo will be up to the standards of Perfect Dark and MGS2 as should Munch's Oddesye. MGSX should also be good, as will Tony Hawk's X and SSX Tricky. Some of these are from Sony and Ninty as we all know but there are still loads more exclusive games that not many will have heard of. DOA3 will be great but cna it beat Tekken 4 on PS2? Jet Set Radio is also looking good summing up a good set of games for X-Box.

It is still too close to tell who will win the console wars. My bet is on PS2 for games, X-Box for graphics and power and GC for playing with as a beachball. Nah, GC will have the usual selection of Mario, Zelda and Rare's furry creatures to keep the fans happy.

Thanks for reading, Afro. :D Merry Christmas!

I read somewhere that Sony are rushing out the PS3 so it will be released by Xmas 2004 which may seem a long way off but Ninty and Microsoft may not have a new console until 2006 or 2007 so it is a lot sooner than we think. They have stated that it may use around similar power to the X-Box.

I ain't gonna argue with Mystique...

She'll *Smash Wiv Stik*!!!

anyway... I think the console war we get quite interesting this time next year... If Microsoft beat the opposition, they could potentially get a stranglehold on the market simply due to all their money...

If Nintendo win (I doubt they will though) they could have the money and confidence to go back to the old style (epic big games, not short and sweet style) and the next Ninty console (hey come on people are already talking about PS3) may be backwards compatible with GC. Although, there is nothing to say Ninty won't go back to their old style after GC is off the ground, and selling steadily.

And if Sony win, we can expect more of the same really. They already dominate the gaming world, bringing it to the masses (ie casual gamers) and more games to appeal to the casual gamers, backed up by strong thrd party support.

The outcome of this generation could also greatly affect Sega, and what they decide to develop (or develop predominantly) for. And Sega could change the course of the console war. There were rumours of Nintendo and Sega creating a joint RPG... imagine if they did... how many Sega fans would buy a GC then? Sega have some huge franchises, and any which are exclusive to one machine are going to help the machine a lot. We know Sega are developing for all consoles at this time, but could that change? If it does, then the balance is sure to tip in one direction or the other.

Lots of factors are going to affect the future of gaming, and we cannot be sure that a new contendor won't enter into the next (after PS2, GC, and Xbox) generation of consoles, as in the previous two generations we have had a new contendor entering (Sony last time, and Microsoft now). The future is bound to be interesting, but all we can do now is wait and enjoy the ride.
