As the year comes to an end, I feel like taking a trip down memory lane. So I’m going to relive my gaming memories and it will hopefully show everyone why I love gaming. From when I was a young boy to the man I am now, games became and still are, a part of my life and a big part at that.

Let’s start at the start. I started out in the world of gaming at an early age with the Spectrum. The Spectrum introduced me to a wonderful world full of flashing blocks and simple but highly addictive gaming. The Spectrum started what is perhaps the greatest addiction known to mankind, playing computer games. My first ever game was Maze Chase. Basically, it was a man painting the outside of boxes being chased by what looked like a bat. As I got more used to the computer, I got better and better to the point where I could play the game for 24 hours and still not die.

I still wasn’t very old and thanks to a certain magazine, my games library grew. I loved every minute I could spare on the Spectrum. Due to overworking the power pack, it burnt out and the Spectrum was gone. But the Spectrum 2 filled the void. Games like First Division Manager, Super Sprint and my selection of quiz games devoured my time and left an imprint on my mind that will never be forgotten. I found numerous books that helped me make Spectrum games for myself.

As an impressionable youth, I found myself wanting the newly released Megadrive. I found myself disliking Nintendo probably because the games cost £50. The world famous blue hedgehog, Sonic, took over my life. I found myself playing it over and over again. I found records on Sonic 1, which I was determined to equal and try adventurous ways of completing the game. Of course, my games library grew and my time was spent playing endless amounts of games.

Although I was against getting a SNES, I thought I should rent one out. I rented out a SNES with F Zero and Super Mario World. I loved playing both of those games, especially F Zero which increased my love of racing and racing games. I completed both games and enjoyed the limited amount of time I had playing the SNES.

Every game I played bought new feelings and experiences as I always tried to improve my ability. I found I could beat my mates quite easily, which disappointed me a bit as I love competition. I acquired numerous add-ons to my Megadrive and the Sonic games still took up most of time. Unfortunately, the add-ons were on their way out and I found that I couldn’t get hold of some games that I wanted. So, if you have any Mega CD games you want to sell, contact me please! :D

During the time of the Megadrive, I managed to get hold of an Amiga. I became multi-talented being able to play games using a joypad and a joystick. My favourite game in which I spend hours and hours was Formula 1 Grand Prix. Sensible Soccer was another classic game. I managed to get most of the games I wanted. Some great memories, some great multiplayer moments and some great personal achievements.

My brother found a job working with computers. He brought home a new PC for the family. The next step in my gaming experience began. My extensive gaming with joypads, joysticks and keyboards all came into play as computers once again took centre stage. As computers got faster and faster, we found ourselves getting more and more computers. The current set-up is 4 computers networked together and a server for storage of files.

The Playstation was the next one on the list and Formula 1 games were once again at the top of my list. The racing element was as strong as ever with the Gran Turismo games and the numerous Formula 1 games that were released. Again the multiplayer element featured strongly and again I was destroying my mates on various titles.

The natural progression led me to the Playstation 2. The old Playstation started to fail and the Playstation 2 was the only thing that could play my old Playstation games. I don’t have many titles for it but I have loved every minute of it.

The gaming experience doesn’t end when I leave the home. The world of handhelds keeps me thoroughly entertained during holidays. At the current moment, my love for gaming has never died since I tapped my first key on the Spectrum many years ago. I never want this love to die, as this has been with me though the few highs and the many lows of my life.

To end this topic, I felt like offering some of my personal gaming highlights that have stuck with me throughout the years.

Completing Sonic 1 with a joystick.
Equalling 21 seconds on the first level of Sonic 1.
Winning many trophies with lower divisions clubs on Sensible Soccer.
Beating my mates over and over again.
Beating my younger brothers times on every game I own.

There are a few of my highlights. Feel free to add your own.

Thanks for reading,

Grandprix
