(To the tune of 'last christmas')
Last christmas you gave me a ps2,
And the very next day, i gave it away.
This year, to save me from tears,
I'm going to ask for a gamecube...
My point being this:
This christmas may not have been a great time for the cube to have been released in europe. In this continent, the ps2's stronghold, the sales over christmas for sony's machine would have been a more significant market factor than we'd see in north america or japan, not just because of the lesser competition, but also because here it is more successful, and desirable to the public.
Were the cube (or x-box for that matter) released here for this christmas, they would have struggled against ps2 and had the kind of bad launch that can set the standard for the machine's lifespan.
By the time next christmas comes around the ps2 will be pretty long in the tooth, while the cube and x-box will still be fresh, as well as having had time to build an attractive line of titles. So instead of a sluggish start, and a sluggish image, the cube and x-box will be able to build up for an epic season of mass marketing and big sales figures, without being stifled by the ps2, come next december.

Ninty aren't gona take back Europe with GC, but I believe it will increase its' standing from where it was with the N64. It should become more 'acceptable' to own a Nintendo console when the casual gamers see Rogue Leader, Resi Evil, and some 'realistic' fighters on the system.
Ninty cannot take back Europe with the GC simply because of the following reasons:
1) Sony have had 2 Christmases worth of sales, a huge brandname, and enough titles to keep sales high... however good the GC games are
2) Ninty has missed an xmas launch... the biggest console selling time
3) Ninty is competing head to head with the Xbox, which has an advertsing budget far larger than the GC... and remember, marketting is far more important than game quality when attracting casual gamers
4) Ninty has not launched with a single, MUST HAVE revolutionary title... see my topic in Prime called "Ninty's future: bleak?"
5) Believe it or not, the Xbox (and indeed the PS2) both have games to compete witht he best of the GC so far!
