Halloween is almost upon us. It’s time for the kids to think about getting dressed up, scaring the neighbourhood and stuffing their faces with sweets until they feel sick. But don’t kids these days spend all their time in front of video games? It’s a good job then that they can stay indoors and play Costume Quest instead. And it will be much better for their teeth.

Other than those that live in exceptionally eventful areas, chances are that the Halloween adventures in Costume Quest will exceed anything kids could experience in the real world. The tale of Costume Quest covers the events of one Halloween evening for brother and sister, Reynold and Wren. New the neighbourhood, mum encourages the kids to go out trick or treating to help them make new friends. As the player, you choose which character to control before the twins set out for some Halloween activities. I chose the sister, Wren, so I’ll explain the game from that view point.

The evening starts with the twins squabbling. Wren is dressed as a robot and is quite rightly rather pleased with her efforts. Reynold’s confectionary outfit is rather poor in comparison and Wren feels this will have an adverse effect on the amount of goodies they will receive. The twins quickly discover that children are not the only ones out on a quest for sweets, there are monsters in the neighbourhood intent on stealing every last drop of confectionary. One mindless monster mistakes Reynold for an edible treat and he is swiped. And so begins the quest to save your sibling.

In true brotherly and sisterly fashion, the objective of the mission is not sourced out of concern for the safety of Reynold. Wren openly admits that if she goes home without her brother then she will be grounded which, at that age, is worse than anything bad that could be happening to her brother.

Costume Quest is an adventure game with some light RPG aspects added to the mix. You will be left to explore the locations, completing quests towards the rescue of your brother, finding essential items and interacting with the various people around town. As well as the main objectives, a selection of side quests can be activated by speaking with people and exploring. Some of the side quests will certainly help the progress towards your goal and all of them are worth completing regardless.

Each of the three locations is relatively small but there is plenty packed into each environment and it will take a reasonable amount of effort to find every nook and cranny. Certain parts of each location are inaccessible until you meet a certain criteria to gain access.

With it being Halloween, costumes play a big part. Completing objectives can give you access to a pattern for a new costume. Through exploration you will be able to find all the items shown in the pattern which then gives you access to the costume. Wren picks up a friend prior to her brother’s disappearance. Progressing through the game will see another friend added to the party. The friends follow Wren throughout the game and you can kit each of them out in any of the costumes you have unlocked. Each outfit has its own special ability which can be used to your benefit during the exploration aspect. These special moves aren’t always going to be essential to your progress but they will help you access areas which were previously blocked off. You’ll need to explore the surrounding areas and complete some quests to find all the parts essential to making your new outfit.

Confectionary is the main collectible. A variety of items can be bashed to collect the goodies hidden inside but the main source is the houses. You can go to each house for a spot of trick or treating and you will be rewarded with oodles of confectionary. But let’s not forget those sweet toothed monsters, they are also aware of the main source of confectionary. Behind many a door you will find a monster and the game’s RPG element kicks in. The game transforms into a turn based battle against the monster enemy. The gameplay is not the only thing to transform, the outfits the children are transformed. The cardboard robot, for instance, becomes a proper metal robot with fully operation attack functions. The attacks are performed through some simple button presses, pressing the correct button or nailing the timing will increase the damage dealt to the monsters. After each of your characters has a turn it is over the monsters. You’ll be given an opportunity to defend and reduce the damage done. Each outfit has a special move which will become available when the meter is filled up. The move depends on the outfit, some will hit the enemy hard, other moves will boost the health of your team. After each victory you are awarded XP which allows you to level up and become more powerful. The battles aren’t the most in-depth you’ll come across but with a variety of outfits with various special moves and a variety of enemies with differing special moves, an element of strategic thinking can be useful.

Complimenting the special powers of the outfits are battle cards. Battle cards are bought using your confectionary supplies and allow an extra ability to be used in battle, whether it be a counter attack move when you successfully defend or whether it is simply a health boost. There are plenty of battle cards to be bought and you can apply one to each child under your control.

Graphically Costume Quest is full of cartoon charm. The characters wouldn’t look out of place in an episode of South Park, although the conversation between them is much more family friendly. The script has been well written and matches the charm of the visuals, the language and humour is very much from the mind of a child. The Halloween theme is used well and the locations are decorated accordingly. Halloween is an event that is well celebrated in this part of America. The suburban location where the games starts off is full of houses with pumpkin lanterns and witch and ghost models in the garden. There are a variety of other children dressed up going about their trick or treating.

Costume Quest is a charming and enjoyable game with a heart warming element to the story game. The battles are relatively shallow and there is a certain repetition to them but they do get progressively more challenging. Experimenting with different outfit combinations and battle cards helps add some freshness and a touch of depth. You will see the end all too quickly but perhaps the length it is just about right. And there is always the DLC if you wish to continue.
