Screenshots. You’ve got to love them, but then again, you’ve got to hate them.

Firstly, you have to love them as they are the first media you ever see of a game. But then again they just don’t do some games justice, but for some too much of a positive effect is given which is wrongly deserved.

For instance, what can we learn about a game from a mere stationary picture?

Graphics? Yep.

What else?

Sure we can get a general idea of what kind of genre the game is but honestly you cannot learn much else from a screenshot apart from how good the graphics are. Could this be why graphics now mean everything to some gamers considering reading the text on the back of a games box is now a chore for some people? And even if it isn’t, the screenshot plays a huge part in whether or not the game appeals to someone or not. So all in all, people are buying a game for what it looks like and not what it plays like.

That’s why I’m not a sucker for screenshots anymore. Instead of buying magazines and looking at pictures there or just looking at the back of games in stores I view the more modern type of screenshot which is easily available online these days. THE DOWNLOADABLE VIDEO!

Yep, it can be downloaded from many a site in less then five minutes using broadband. But for modems it will take a little longer.

So what more can we learn about a game from a video?

Graphics? Yep.
Sound? Yep.
Gameplay? Alot more then a screenshot can teach you.

Overall it’s a better way to see how the game plays making the descion much more easier then it is looking at a screenshot. It’s like the Moon Landing which they said was a hoax, could we tell it was fake through a picture as much as we could from a video? Nope, more evidence is given through the video feed. What about Zelda? “That iz Poo!” I heard, yet when the video was seen lots changed their mind. It is mind blowing when you see it moving, a real work of art. I must admit, I wasn’t sure about the game when I first read the screenshots but the video gave me full confidence in making sure I own the game.

I feel sorry for all the idiots that have gone into a shop and bought a game just by looking at the screenshots. They would of gone home, started to play the game and thought “Damn, this sucks but the graphics are neat”. Whilst others who thought the idea of the game looked good through a screenshot could be just as disappointed, “Well, it didn’t play how I thought it would” or “It isn’t as fun as it looked”. To stop this I urge more pods in gaming stores to be set up so people can see the game running or even give it a go themselves. Too rubbish a store to get a pod? Stick a few TV screens up and run a demo. I swear I was the only one looking up at the TV today in the shop, no-one else cared about what was being played above their heads.

So they say a picture can say a thousand words, so what about a video? What about actually giving the game ago yourself?

Look deep into the game before you buy. Go read a few reviews, watch some videos. Don’t be a sucker.
