3 letter name entry. Back in the days of Smash TV being in the arcades, and that Sega dome thing that played a western style game with holograms, three letters was the norm. It's probably not true but you can imagine that in the days of 16 bit being next-gen and the Neo Geo was for lottery winners, three letters on a 10 name list was pretty impressive.
Not any more. Technology is way ahead of letting people only enter 3 letters. Loads of games let you set up profiles with 10, so why do some games still only allow 3?
You could say that arcade games, like Tekken, only allow 3 to add to the feel that the game is an arcade game, like you were playing down the local leisure centre or when the fair was in town, and as a lot of home conversions of arcade games that allow more than 3 characters still only allow 3 in their arcade counterparts the 3 letters give a feel for the arcade.
But in the home, 3 letters isn't enough. In my house, we have an Ali, an Alan and an Adam. There is a 3 letter way around this, but then what if we had mates called Alistair, Alain, Alanis? I've got a mate called Steve Alinson...
And what about the people that have names that can't be shortened to 3 letters? Pete, Paul, Troy, Mike, Slave, etc? What are they supposed to do?
Come on, game companies, at least give us 4, then some of us might be able to use vowels!
I had the high score by a mile on the arcade at the local swimming pool, it wasn't beated until they took the machine away. I tried to buy it but I diddn't have enough money at the time.
Then I showed him the superb control system using the SNES pad and he was silenced. Forever.
Damn, that game was class...
