Take the NTL software off - you don't need it!
I now have a cable modem, but when I was using NTLworld's dial-up 0800 connection, I hated the software too.
Basically all it does is adjust your standard Windows network and dial-up settings (including the phone number dialled) and give you a kind of control panel to access them by.
What I did was go through all the settings in the NTL software - phone number, TCP/IP settings, Primary & Secondary DNS servers etc. - and make a note of them; then I un-installed NTL's software and configured the settings manually.
And hey-presto - same connection, using standard Windows options.
