I hadn’t bought a copy of Official Playstation Magazine for a long time, to be more precise since my Playstation was bought and that was in 1997, so it was like there was something special in this issue, one was the cover which attracted me as it was talking about Final Fantasy IX.
So I got the magazine and looked through it, the magazine had really changed, obviously because it has been like 3 years since I had read one. The first thing I read was the preview of Final Fantasy 9 and I couldn’t wait for it, then I was disappointed as the European release date was very far away ( it was stated in that issue as 19 July
( Japan ), October 2000 ( US ) and November 2000 ( Europe ).
I kept on asking myself, why Japan gets the game(s) first, and then followed by US and lastly Europe as I kept on reading the magazine. There was also a huge portion of the magazine devoted to Playstation 2 and games that were at launch in Japan and also coming soon titles. I fell in love with the console and also the games because I had never seen games with such graphics. I then remembered that earlier on the year the Playstation 2 launched in Japan and Europe and America would get it at the same time and later than when Japan got it, that date was confirmed as 24th October 2000.
But now after reading OPSM I now knew that games come out in Japan before any other territory which really got me very p*****d, the same went for Playstation 2 console and its games release dates.
When the Playstation 2 launched in Japan, there was a bit of coverage on the TV but that didn’t really get to me but this magazine made me want to play all the games out there, so after reading the June issue I was just so impatient so I decided to get the next issue which was for July, so that time could pass more quickly.
The next OPSM had Spider-man on the cover and it was the one which came with the PSM2 mini mag which I found more informative than even Official Playstation magazine and these two made me even more impatient.
I liked the PSM2 mini-mag that I didn’t see the need of buying the Official UK Playstation magazine anymore and so on the 1st of September I got PSM2. In it had info on pre-ordering and so on 7th of September as me and my dad were doing shopping, since it was on a Saturday I convinced him to pre order a Playstation 2 for me but I wasn’t sure whether it would arrive at launch as PSM2 and most gaming sites were talking about shortages in Europe and USA due to the demand in Japan. PSM2 also said that Dixons would have the most number of consoles than any other store so that’s were I pre-ordered my PS2.
Anyways what actually got me remembering all this stuff was because I was reading some of my old PSM2 magazines and noticed that some games mentioned in that issue haven’t been released yet in the UK and Europe, just to name a few: Tomb Raider next-gen; Wipeout Fusion; Robocop; and Metal Gear Solid 2.
So back to the beginning of this story, the knowledge I got from that June OPSM mag I wish I never had it, that way games could come out secretly ( to me as I wouldn’t have read much info on it ) and that would mean that every time I went to a games store I would always find a new game out, like the way it was before I had read this mag. But that’s life and part of growing up meaning you get more knowledge as you grow older.
Also from all these I think that hype usually comes from mags and game websites that have info on new games, if I hadn’t read those magazines I’m sure I wouldn’t have got a Playstation 2 at launch as I wouldn’t be bothered or I would be expecting it at launch on the shelves of most stores which wasn’t the case.
Oh and due to the fact that Final Fantasy 9 was released on February of this year, I really couldn’t be bothered to get it as I already had a Playstation 2 and so I decided to get Playstation 2 games instead.
Thanks for reading Merry Christmas and a happy new year to everyone

> Final Fantasy 9 is amazing. Just because you had a PS2 doesnt mean you had to
