I miss the type of cartoon that used to come on when I was a child, the adventures you’d go on with these wonderful characters, you just couldn’t wait for the next episode. I reckon it’s about time these made a come back, and what with cartoon style cel-shaded graphics being all the rage these days, why not bring them back in game form?
One of the first cartoons that springs to mind is Ulysses, or Ulysses 31 as I just discovered it was called. So what type of game would Ulysses make? Well the series was all about our hero, (with a rather tidy beard that never grew in length, another curse from the Gods? I think so) trying to find the Kingdom of Hades, in order to revive his crew, who are lifeless, floating in a room on Ulysses’ ship.
The best place to start, as always seems to be the way, would be the very beginning. Why not play as Ulysses having to save the children, including his son, Telemachus (I had to look that one up!). Upon defeating the Cyclops the Gods of Olympus would become angry, and place their curse upon our hero, to travel unknown space looking for the Kingdom of Hades, with the rest of his crew as lifeless as stone.
From here the game would be split into two parts, flying around in your ship, and exploration of the planets you choose to land on. Of course, on these planets would be all manner of hostile creatures, as featured in the cartoon itself, and using character zapping features you could play as any one from Ulysses, Telemachus, the blue-faced Yumi and the cute little robot No-no. They’d all have different skills, with Ulysses being the action Jackson of the group, blasting everything in sight, Telemachus would be good with technical stuff, probably, Yumi would be blue, which must be useful in some circumstances, and No-no, being a robot, would be able to do important robot-esque things. Fix stuff and the like, I’d imagine.
The game would have to feature the funky theme tune, variations of which could play throughout the whole game.
Moving swiftly on, I propose a game based on the long running Mysterious Cities of Gold. With such a large group of characters travelling together, I guess this would be an RPG. In fact, the characters are almost perfect for this type of game. You have young male and female as important characters, child of the sun Esteban, and the Inca girl, Zia, hoping to find their fathers as well as having the keys to this city of gold. You have Tao, as he has some secret, as well as Mendoza, the tough guy. For comedic value you throw in the bungling oafs Sancho and Pedro, who I always thought had a little of the monkey about his appearance.
All of the best RPG’s (now I’m thinking Crono Trigger, and the Phantasy Star games) involve ships of some kind being used. MCoG would be no different once the characters discover the Condor, the golden eagle ship. Damn that was cool. I don’t really remember a whole bunch of enemies in the series, but to make the game any good, you’d have to have plenty of battles, but given the rich vein of imagery that the series conveys, I doubt any developer would have trouble creating a host foes to go alongside the typical troublesome Spaniards after the gold.
Another long cartoon series, and shown more than once, was Around the World With Willy Fog. Now most games have quite a back-story, explaining how people got into such a situation, so it would be refreshing to see the whole thing start of as a simple wager, to travel around the world in 80 days to win £10000. What was great about the series, and would be great about the game, were the obstacles that Willy Fog and his companions faced. Transfer, the aptly named master of disguise often tried to put a stop to Willy’s travels, and this could so easily be transferred to a game as an adventure with puzzle solving parts. I also remember that a bulldog was chasing after them, a police man trying to arrest Willy for a bank robbery, but it’s really a case of mistaken identity. Having to flee whenever he showed up would be a fun part of the game.
Dungeons and Dragons, the sad dice rolling adventure game for those with few friends has spawned many games, as well as a fantastic cartoon series. Why this cartoon never turned into a game, I don’t know, but surely now is it’s time. With all of the great characters, it would cool to make this as an online game, so each one could be played by a real person. With Hank, Eric, Bobby, Presto, Sheila and Diana you have a variety of skills, and could use these to solve various puzzles, as well as battling with hoards of orcs, and eventually tangling with Vengar. I guess it would be similar to the recent Lord of the Rings game. You could even get an inferior player to join in as Uni. Every now and then you could come across a way to get home, but just miss out on it...
Given that my whole motivation for writing this (apart from the lack of desire to watch Kermit the Swamp Years again) is that my husband has the Dogtanian theme on the desktop, so that’s yet another one which could be a game.
Learn your sword fighting skills as you progress as Dogtanian. Go on adventures with the other muskehounds. Try to win the hand of the fair Juliet, as well as fighting with the guards of Cardinal Richelieu. I don’t remember this too well though, but there isn’t a musketeer based game around, is there? Why not make them, and turn all of the characters into animals a lá Dogtanian?
Then there was She-Ra and He-Man. Though each episode was designed to sell the new toys (as well as deliver healthy morals at the end of each episode) it certainly had a lot going for it. The characters were cool, and there were loads of them (loads of merchandise). I guess that She-Ra was more for me, in fact it pretty much was He-Man for girls, wasn’t it. Why not make a game then, in which you can choose to start off as either character? Either He-Man has been captured, and you have to save him as She-Ra, or vice versa. Again, this game would be based on beating up all the bad guys. They just don’t seem to do that in cartoon these days, not zany enough I guess.
There are so many other cool cartoons that I think would make really great games now. Mr Benn for instance, every level is a new outfit, and a new adventure. Hong Kong Phooey could combine adventure with kung-fu battles. Transformers has tremendous appeal. And Captain Caveman, despite being a rip off of Scooby Doo, was still really cool.
I guess the problem is that many of these cartoons only have nostalgia or retro appeal, so we’ll never see them as games.
Good job though! A good post is a very rare thing for a newbie.
:)
The only cartoon I can relate to there is He-Man, but what a great cartoon it was. I went insane for that as a child. There's a place near me called 'Never Never Land' and they have a building which looks like a castle with all He-Man figures set up. Theres all these sounds as well, it was greta when I was little. I think they've closed it own now though, not sure.
Your right about the cell shading and how some of the old-skool cartoons should make a comeback using it. The only company I can think of using these graphics for their cartoons are Disney with Donald Duck PK, or something close to that name.
I want Turtles dammit! That was the cartoon I loved most as a kid. Wore the clothes and everything. There was a game on the Amiga I use to play and that ruled.
I just looked up Turtles on IGN and there is a game coming out for GameCube, PS2 and probably Xbox called 'Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles' made by Konami. Cell shaded? I don't know, but how cool.
