Good suggestion

Hes right - DMC isa the first game to really use more of the PS2 thatn the other gamers have ventured into, shame its so short thou :)
(Like the Mega 32, The N64 ram cards, and so on)
One of the strongest features of a console is that you buy it, and then all you need to buy from then on is games. None of this minimum requirements lark you get with PCs.

The harddrive is going to about £100 on its own for the 40 GB. It would be nice for Sony to upgrade it like this but I dont know if it would be possiable to do it through the port for the harddrive. Remember how bad the first PS1 games look compared to PS1 games today. There is a massive difference. I had Tekken 3 put in Tekken 2 straight after I played Tekken 3. The graphical difference was quite huge. The PS2 is getting better graphics all the time, as developers are learning how to get that little bit extra from the PS2 each time they develop a game.
The thing with add-ons, like other people have said is that not everyone will own it. This could really kill off the console. The way Sony advertise the harddrive may make or break the system. Games that support the harddrive may not do well due to the lack of PS2 owners with the harddrive. If they dont release enough games that are designed for the harddrive then people wont buy it. I will buy it as Final Fantasy X supports it.
I think that if Sony actually gave away a harddrive for free it could solve the problem. This would mean everyone could have a harddrive and every game can be developed to be used with the harddrive. The harddrive will be able to cache games, which will make them play like Jak and Daxter. Store save files, extra character, weapons e.t.c for games. Sony could give out a free harddrive of only 2 Gb, so that the caching feture could be used in games aswell as a little bit of storage for save files e.t.c. 2 Gb harddrive will be very cheap. Sony then could sell upgrade harddrives which can range from 5 Gb all the way to 100 Gb. People would be able to swap the harddrive easily and keep the old ones that are full, if they never wanted to delete the files off them.
Developers would know that they can use harddrive features in there games as everyone will have at least a 2 Gb harddrive. The people who want to store more data can buy another hardrive and use that. People who arent interested would keep the 2 Gb harddrive.
I know Sony may lose money in distrubiting all the 2 Gb harddrives. But in the end they should win out. I remember that the N64 had the memory expansion pak. It cost around £25, but only a few games used it. People who didnt have one may not have bought a game because they didnt have the expansion pak. Also Donkey Kong 64 was released only with the memory expansion pak, for about £60. I already had the expansion pak, so didnt buy this game because I didnt want another one.
Sony must get the harddrive right as it could really make the system a big success or make it flop like many add-ons before it.
The PS2 would become too much like a PC. I really wouldn't like this idea. Sony don't really need better graphics anyway. The games devolpers aren't using the full potential at the moment, and the PS2 games could get much better without need for extra hardware.
Good suggestion though.
