Just collecting peoples ideas please...

School trips recently have been a bit unreliable as to when the coach turns up for pick up. I would like to try and find a system the school would easily be able to adopt so that someone can send updates via SMS / mobile phone - needs to be flexible which can then be picked up easily by others.

Need to bear in mind the broad technology that parents / teachers own and the broad level of skills i.e. simple to set-up, communicate and use.

I appreciate there may be some solutions within social networking sites but don;'t want to force people to have to join these things to make it work.

Suggestions please...

Hi Tigger-too,

An SMS system would work but will no doubt cost money to run.

Another idea might be to make use of Twitter. You could setup a new account or use an existing one if the school have one.

People can monitor the Twitter account using 'normal' means - i.e. Twitter phone or PC apps etc.

BUT you could also embed the Twitter account on a web page (again either an existing one or a new one). I embed my Twitter stream here using Twitters Profile Widget and also run another Widget in this demo searching for my fav Hosts/ISP!

If you are making use of an existing account you could use a unique 'hashtag' for the travel updates and display it using the Search Widget.

This means authorised people would be able to update the messages - from phone or PC etc. and people would be able to receive the messages in the same flexible way or go to a web page to check the latest status - all for free!

If privacy was an issue it could still be done with Twitter by using a protected account - but this wouldn't be so straight forward to operate.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forums, Tigger-too :¬)

A simple solution, seeing as everyone has a mobile phone these days, would be the 'old' telephone tree scenario. The 'school/trip leader' would send a pre-arranged text message to two nominated contacts, these two forward the message to an agreed number of other people and so forth and so on. Used to work for us during 'bad weather' scenarios.
