Hi

What do you think of the DVD function on the PS2 in comparison to a DVD player. I am pretty fussy when it comes to picture quality, and especially sound quality.

Also, is the PS2 multi regional?

Cheers

If youre really into the quality, get a different player. The sound is up to par if you have a digital amp, but the quality isnt the best. Think of it as a bonus rather than a feature.

If you've got £200 to spend on a PS2 or a DVD player, get the PS2, byut if you have £400 to spend on a DVD player alone, get the DVD player.

It's definitely not as good as my standalone Pioneer and I've got the updated drivers etc.

It's a big bonus but I would never have bought the PS2 for the main purpose of playing DVD's. You can get a dedicated Sony DVD player for the same price.

I think that the DVD player is just as good as one that you could buy and if you buy the Sony DVD remote they give you an upgrade for it.

I don't use it as my main player, but I recently watched the Region 1 version of Natural Born Killers (using DVD Region X via RGB SCART), and the picture and sound quality were not noticably different to my high-end dedicated player.

Dont forget the standard lead doesnt do the playback any favours. Get a RGB lead from SR for £12.99 and Region-X for £16.99. Then use Region-X all the time even for UK discs to get rid of the green screen from normal RGB playback.

I would agree that the PS2 DVD is great but there are better. But for £199.99 you cant beat the PS2 for price. If your after just a DVD player buy a stand alone.

I think it's best to judge for yourself. I have a seperate player which i now keep downstairs but i also have a PC which i can output to my TV and i'll soon have the PS2.

I had a sneak peek at my PS2 a while back and tried MI:2 in it and compared the playback to my PC and i have to say the playback on my PC was better.

Try it first or find someone who has a PS2 try a DVD in it and if you like the quality it'll be fine but once you see it next to a seperate player there is a big difference

I find the DVD player perfectly acceptable. Its about what you could expect from a £99+ player (I suppose not a mid-range one like I said before). You can't really expect much more, as a £99 DVD player means a £100 PS2, which is blo*ody good value.
If you're only thinking of buying a PS2 purely for its DVD capabilities, then you could get better for your money, and you would probably want to stay away from a PS2.

I'm happy, anythings better than my old VHS. If you buy Sony's DVD remote control, or get a PS2 with new drivers, the DVD player gets better (more functions and more reliability).

Hi Vamp

Are you saying the playback is pants even with UK DVD's?

At the moment, it will be pro-logic, but eventually (hopefully) will upgrade to 5.1

you need region x and an NTSC telly if playing US disks (region 1) and no the playback is pants compared to a stand alone player although it's ok as a bedroom player.

are you gonna hook it up to a dolby digital set up or a dolby pro logic set up?

The PS2 is not multiregional unless you buy DVD Region X. The PS2 is about as good as a mid-line stand alone player in my opionion.
