WuHu Island, home of Wii Sports resort and land of blue skies and fluffy white clouds. What better place to explore by plane, hang glider or even rocket belt?

Pilotwings Resort takes us back to the island that last hosted the Wii's premier sporting game, but somehow it manages to make it look even better than it did on the big screen.

Nintendo's latest development of a franchise that started out with the SNES and worked its way on to the N64 is a completely different kettle of fish to its fore bearers. The originals had you falling and (just about) flying through hoops, but resort takes this one step further and opens up the game world for a much bigger game.

From the menu you get two very different modes to choose from. Mission Flight mode will take you through a bunch of set tasks in three different types of craft. The plane is the easiest to control here with the Rocket Belt and Hang Glider using very different techniques to keep them in the air. Flying through hoops is still the order of the day in some tasks, but you're also tasked with reaching markers in a set time, shooting moving and still targets and flying in certain ways through templates of your craft.

These tasks are graded based on how well you've done and achieving 3 stars in all events will take some doing. It is worth aiming for though, as doing so will gain you extra craft and options in the Free Flight mode and will help you get to the next series of events.

Free Flight is a different game entirely. While the missions can be fairly stressful at times, Free Flight is a relaxing jaunt through those beautiful blue skies and around the island. Being able to fly right up to the volcano with a relaxed time limit or zoom through tunnels and around hills is a fantastic feeling and well worth experiencing in 3D.

The main aim of Free Flight is to gather up the balloons and fly through stunt hoops which require you to enter at certain angles. These unlock information about landmarks, as well as going towards your final score. They also unlock items for use in the game, extending the mode further. Once unlocked, you can choose from several starting points and different times of day, as well as using different variations of your vehicles.

Graphically, Pilotwings Resort is one of the best looking 3DS games so far. The bright colours and excellent lighting effects really help to make it feel like somewhere you'd want to stay. The 3D is also pretty impressive, especially when you fly through a tunnel or around the big suspension bridge.

The only thing really missing from this package is multiplayer. There's no option to go head to head as with the Wii's Wii Sports Resort, where you could shoot each other down or aim to collect the most balloons. There isn't even Streetpass support for the best times, something that would surely have been easy to impliment for Nintendo. It's a real shame that these things are missing from an otherwise excellent package.

Other than this, I really enjoyed my stay at WuHu Island and I'll be looking to renew my pilot's license very soon. Pilotwings Resort is the perfect example of Nintendo's mix of challenge and experience.
