Which console to chose? I know most people in here own a PS2 but what if you want to get another, which one would you, chose? There are a few people in here like me that own various consoles and will continue to buy other consoles as well as the beloved PS2. So here's a low down on each console.

PS2
The PS2 is the oldest of the 3 next-gen consoles, but this does not mean it’s the least powerful. The Emotion Engine processor works like magic. It has advanced capabilities which can easy generate different particle effects and model realistic environments, such as gravity and friction to the computer world. PS2 has 32 mb RAM and only 4 mb of graphics RAM. A lot of people laughed including me at the amount of graphics RAM it had. The DC had 8 mb and it was already out a year and a half before the PS2. But the PS2 doesn’t need much video RAM, unlike every other console or PC graphics card to be made it processors the data differently. The PS2 doesn’t even need to store much data into the graphics RAM as everything is pipelined straight to the screen.

The PS2 is quite a difficult machine to develop for, as it was a new way of programming. Anti-Aliasing has been hard to implement, with some games have major in game slow down due to the added Anti-Aliasing effect. But once the developers had got to grips with the system they have found out the true power of the console, and can create fabulous worlds like Jak And Daxter.

Jak And Daxter is the first PS2 game or any CD/DVD based game to eliminate any loading times. You get the loading time when you first boot up the game, but from then on it’s a seamless world with every destination reachable with out any loading times to hamper your game. There are also many other top class games out there right now. In 6 weeks, 7 top class games had been released. The games were Grand Theft Auto 3, Silent Hill 2, Pro Evolution Soccer, SSX Tricky, Tony Hawks 3, Devil May Cray, and Jak And Daxter. There are also other games that are must buy titles they include, Gran Turismo 3, Resident Evil Code Veronica X, Red Faction, Zone Of The Enders, Time splitters, Onimusha. Many great games are planned for next year which includes probably the most anticipated game of all time Metal Gear Solid 2. Also due are Final Fantasy X, Time splitters 2, Tekken 4, Virtua Fighter 4, Wipeout Fusion.

The PS2 started its life with a shaky start with only a few good games but now they are flooding in. The PS2 has also got add on devices planned. The broadband or 56k modem internet support will be available sometime in the summer. The PS2 user will then be able to play games online as well as surf the internet and download save files, extra weapons, characters and levels for games. Also planned to be released at the same time is the PS2 hard disk. The capacity is a whooping 40 Gb which is 5 times larger than the X-Box hard disk. The hard disk will allow a greater number of saves to be stored, extra levels can be found on the internet or DVD's from magazines, extra weapons, characters could also be available. The hard disk will also help cut down loading times. It will do this by caching the information on the hard disk. What this does is it will keep reading the disk and loading in data that will be needed. Once you get to the area that’s been cached to the hard disk it reads it from the hard disk and the process goes round in a loop. The cached data isn’t stored on the hard disk permantly, it’s just a temporary data store which is removed when the machine is turned off. So in theory every game should have no loading times what so ever, just like Jak And Daxter.

PS2 is a great machine with an amazing line up of games out now and coming out soon. The PS2 has sold well over 20 million consoles world wide. With the success of the PS1 people will want to trust Sony's PS2 and at the price of £199.99 it’s a bargain.

X-Box
The X-Box is Microsoft's first console. It is the most powerful of the 3 next-gen consoles. The X-Box uses current and old PC technology. There is a customised Geforce graphics card which as powerful if not more powerful than current Geforce 3 PC graphics cards. Its also uses an Intel Pentium 3 733 MHz processor, this is faster than the Game Cube and PS2 put together. The components maybe from a PC but Microsoft have turned them into a console, these PC type components have been modified, so that they are working as fast as they can. The X-Box has 64 mb RAM which can be used in any way the developers want. This will allow a greater depth for developers to work with as they will not be confined to a certain limit of graphics RAM or main RAM.

The X-Box is a lot like a PC so development for games will be easy for the console. The Odd world game started off as a PS2 game but moved to the X-Box because the game developers said "X-Box is more powerful and easier to work with".

X-Box has a pretty good launch line up which includes the fabulous Halo, Dead Or Alive 3 and Project Gothem. More titles are also in development which include Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Jet Set Radio Future, Metal Gear Solid X and Crazy Taxi Next Gen. Sega are supporting the X-Box with around 11 titles being developed for the X-Box. These titles aren’t exclusive to the X-Box, but will appear on the X-Box first. X-Box has a long list of developers developing for the X-Box, at the moment just under 200 titles are being developed for the X-Box.

X-Box is also the first console to include an inbuilt hard disk. The disk capacity is 8 Gb, this is mainly used for caching games and to store save files. Also extra character, weapons and levels maybe downloaded from the internet via the broadband connection or from DVD's from magazines. The X-Box has an Ethernet connection as standard, which can be used to access the internet through a broadband line. Or it can be used to link up a number of X-Boxes together to create a LAN, which multi-player games can be used on.

Just like PC owners can download MP3's, X-Box user will be able to convert there music CD's into MP3's which are stored on the hard disk. These MP3's can then be sorted into play lists. Some games like Project Gothem have the ability to use these MP3's as game music. So instead of listening to the sometimes awful game music, rip your favourite CD to the X-Box's hard disk and listen to that instead.

The X-Box doesn’t include a DVD player. If you buy the X-Box and set it up at home you will not be able to play DVD movies straight away once you have got it out of the box. To play DVD movies you will need to buy a DVD remote control which will enable you to watch DVD movies. The cost of the remote control will be around £30 so for £329.99, you will be able to have an X-Box and DVD Player.

Overall the X-Box is one serious piece of kit, it has the power and the features which could mean the end of the PS2. But there’s one problem, and that’s Microsoft. People know that Microsoft produce Windows for PC's. A lot of people have hated Microsoft at one point in time if they have had a PC, due to errors which occur and just won’t go away. Microsoft are the new boys in town, its competitors have been in the business for many years and have won over a lot of fans. The one thing that Microsoft have going is the amount of money they can spend. The advertising campaign for the X-Box runs into millions and millions. They have the money to make the X-Box work.

Game Cube
The GC is the last of the next-gen consoles. It’s the smallest as well. Nintendo have moved away from the cartridge based systems of past and opted for 8cm optical disks. These disks have a storage capacity of 1.5 Gb which is 3.2 Gb less than that of the PS2 and X-Box DVD storage media. The new optical disks are a bit special though, as they are much faster than DVD's. The disks are so fast that they more or less act like cartridges, so this means games load up instantly.

The GC also has some very powerful hardware with 43mb of memory and a 405 MHz processor. The polygon/sec spec is only between 6-12 million with the PS2 quoting 66-75 million and the X-Box 125 million. But Nintendo have quoted in game polygons. All the other consoles quote the raw polygon amount, these polygons are simple polygons with no textured or lighting effects. Once these effects are applied the 125 million will soon drop down to a lot lower figure.

The GC has some impressive launch titles which include Luigi's Mansion, Pikimin, Rogue Leader, Tony Hawks 3, SSX Tricky, Wave Race Blue Storm and Super Smash Brother Melee. The GC also has other great games being developed, with Sega also developing games for the GC as well as the other consoles. Other game to look out for will be Zelda, Super Metriod, Starfox Adventures and Crazy Taxi. Resident Evil is also getting a remake on the GC as well as Resident Evil 4 being an exclusive title.

The GC also offers broadband or 56k modem internet support. There are also a number of different capacity memory cards which will vary in price. One very big advantage the GC has is that it links up to the GBA. This will probably allow players to download mini games on to their GBA, just like Sega tried to do with the VMU.

Nintendo are a well respected company that have been developing games and consoles for many years. They are well know for there fun and original games that some can class as some of the greatest games to be ever made. Nintendo had a pretty rough time over here with the N64, the console just about failed to devliver, with great games being available but only 1 every few months. The N64 was a success over in America and Japan but here the PS1 knocked it out of the race. This maybe the main hurdle Nintendo will have to climb to gain respect again. Die hard Nintendo fans will rush out and buy this straight away, while other people will think twice, due to the N64 failing to do any good. The GC has a good advantage over the X-Box and that is that it’s only £199.99 which is £100 cheaper than the X-Box.

I own a PS2, and have pre-ordered an X-Box. I think I’ll wait for the GC to come out for a month or two before spending my money. Even if I wanted the GC on launch day I don’t think I would be allowed or have the money as I would have only had my X-Box for a few weeks or a month or two depending on the release date for the GC. For me all 3 consoles are good, each offering great games and graphics. Which one (Or 2or 3) would you chose?

Yep been a member since the Atari ST and Amiga days. First game I ordered was Sleep Walker(I think or maybe Elite 2) on the Atari ST. So maybe a member for 9 or 10 years. Well its my dad whos got his name as the member as I was only 9 or 10 when we joined. The membership is up in Feb so i'll probably change it into my name instead.

Shame about only 1 GAD win. I won it for a Z.O.E review. I've posted lots of other good stuff but cant seem to win again. Oh well, GAD isnt the most important thing on this site and if I dont win its because my post wasnt the best. I hoped to win with this one though. Cheers MM for the nice comments about my post.

I hate people who repeat posts just to say a few words. If I repeat a message its usually because the message iam replying to isnt directly below my post(like this one) or with long posts I usually only take out the little bit I need to make a comment about it. But copying my post and putting "I agree" in aswell is plain stupid.
