I remember the days when there weren’t really any big multimedia (games) stores, such as Special Reserve, Game and EB. Back then it all used to be small local stores like a corner shop.

You would go down your local game shop (what ever it may be called) you would walk in, and the room wouldn’t be much bigger than the average bedroom. There wouldn’t be many games, only about 1 hundred or so. And there would be a big fat bloke sat behind the counter than knew the name of every title and how it played, and how to complete it! They all looked the same as well. Some times they would have a small skinny bloke with glasses though (typical computer geek image).

But as time has gone on this has all changed. I think it all really started when the SNES and Megadrive came on the scene. As the market for games suddenly boomed so did the shops. They evolved from little local shops with only a few titles that were on the shelves, to great big get lost stores.

Also as time has gone on, not only has the size of the stores changed, but also the layout has! Yeah I know some of them are still crap, because you cant even find a bright pink Barbie game box anywhere on the shelves but they have improved.

When the Playstation was released we saw another change in the layout of stores, instead of evenly distributed shelves we had more PS than anything else. The less popular formats where reduced in size, and we got more walls of just shelves.

But now we have four fairly good consoles (PS2, X-Box, GC, GBA) is the layout and size of these stores going to change? Because before the first PS there wasn’t many games, as they couldn’t be made very quickly. But this soon changed because of the CD format, so more shelf spaced was used/made.

All of these consoles now have a similar format that makes games easier and quicker to make, so now we are going to have hundreds more titles on display. How are the stores going to cope? Most stores are already full up and that’s only with the PS games, what’s going to happen when the GC and X-Box come along? Are the stores going to get bigger, are they going to be laid out better? Or are we going to have more stores opening, maybe just specialising on certain consoles.
