I just spotted this in the letters page of XBM: a letter regarding Special Reserve, slanderously titled: 'SPECIAL NEEDS'.

"Dear XBM,
I see that in issue #14 someone asked you, "will there ever be a GTA game on Xbox?" You said no. This is untrue as I saw it in the very good discount mag, SPECIAL RESERVE, in about November but then in the next issue this had been withdrawn. Why is this?
[...]
Oh yeah and the best deal around is in the SPECIAL RESERVE discount mag: Xbox, one controller, Halo, Splinter Cell, JSRF & Sega GT all for £198. Keep going.

Jonathon Smith, Highcliffe

XBM's Reply: For the last time. Sony has signed an exclusivity deal with Rockstar, which will last a reported 5 years. So in spite of what the 'very good' Special Reserve magazine might say, it is not coming on Xbox for the forseeable future... "

(p.116 XBM, issue 17, Paragon Publishing)

Ooooooh [draws small red handbag towards chin], XBM getting a little shirty with that reply, methinks. It's not really fair for any gaming mag to criticise any others for misinterpreted release dates etc. I don't think I've ever read a release schedule in any mag that isn't peppered with inaccuracies (including that same issue of XBM!).

Frankly, it doesn't really matter if the SR magazine is belittled: it is after all, essentially a retail catalogue: not an overpriced editorial publication. But clock that free advert for the SR XBox deal at the end... that's gotta be good. So, go-on, write a stupid letter to XBM and put SR back in the media limelight ; )

...please find templates for your potential letters below...

1] Dear XBM,
In the very good discount mag: SPECIAL RESERVE I noticed the game ,[...], was priced at [...] and not the [...] reported in your magazine, does this mean you are wrong?

2] Dear XBM,
In your last issue you provided a discount voucher for 'GAME' inside the mag. But I get my games free from the very good discount mag: SPECIAL RESERVE. What purpose does the voucher serve?

3] Dear XBM,
In the very good discount mag: SPECIAL RESERVE I noticed some very good Gamecube deals: [...] [...] and [...]. Could your magazine also please cover gamecube games?

4] Dear XBM,
I noticed XBM gives away one game per month for the star letter. The very good discount mag: SPECIAL RESERVE gives away 3 games every single day. In which case: Why should I waste my time writing to you?

PS I take absolutely no responsibilty for encouraging a barrage unsolicited mail to XBM... Even if it is my fault.
