For anyone who hasn't heard Infinium labs have announced a new console. The Phantom. It's a lot like the x box in that it's a PC but it differs in that there is a built in always-on broadband connection and no where to put your games.
This is the part I'm not ready for. You can't buy games for it. Instead you download them from infinium, on a pay per play basis. Is this really the future of gaming? I doubt it. Some reports note that the console could be released as early as the end of this year (yeah, right).
The thing is, the more I think about it it seems to make more sense. Microsoft want to stop people buying their software and instead to make them continually pay for a license to run their operating system. People already play games on sky boxes on a pay per play basis.
I still can't see us being ready just yet, but is this the real future of gaming? What do you think?
Infinium are boasting that the phantom will be:-
The most robust gaming console
A state of the art design and architecture
A large number of preloaded games that appeal to a wide variety of users and to their specific gaming needs
Online connectivity for multi player gaming
The ability to play against PC gamers online
Seamless upgrades and patch management
A multi tiered subscription service that meets the needs of casual, moderate and hard-core game players
The opportunity to demo games before purchasing or subscribing
And up to 50,000 games to choose from

Plus, the website is very pretty, but only to a certain point. A lot of it is distinctly amateurish.
I personally don't believe it for a second.
If it is indeed a PC, it'll just get chipped to run local games too.
