Come to think of it, there SHOULD be advertising in video games - developers need the money more than ever these days, and advertising could produce a well needed boost for all the small developers who can't afford to make creative games anymore, thus meaning they could make longer, better, more exciting games. Advertising could be a good thing for the industry.
But how could they implement it? Any product that stopped someone in the middle of a boss battle in Metroid Prime would instantly be hated by everyone, so they would have to be sneaky about it to make sure of maximum exposure. Perhaps half time on Fifa could be filled with adverts for sensodyne and Claims Direct, allowing EA to claim that it gives the game a 'real' effect, just like watching the football on the telly. Nintendo could introduce advertising into Mario games as well - Once you beat Bowser, it goes to a cut scene...
Peach - Mario, how did you do that? Bowser could have killed you and you still kept your cool!
Mario - All because I use Lynx - Keep cool, Use Lynx
Those button tapping annoyances in Mortal Kombat - Deadly Alliance could also prove a good tool for kitchen towel companies, with stars like Sonya Blade and Cyrax having to battle it out to see who could clean up a coffee spill, with the winner claiming it was because they used Bounty instead of another leading market brand. There is a whole mine of untapped opportunities.
But if you look closely there is already advertising happening in games, albeit very subtly. Take Fifa for example - it's probably the biggest culprit of subtle advertising in a game. Next time you play, take a look at the edge of the pitch - it's littered with adverts for companies like Nike and EA, and yet you don't notice it - at least not consciously. Super Monkey Ball is another example with it's 'Dole' bananas taking up a role in the game Animal Crossing's advertisements are just absurd, and don't even try to be inconspicuous to the user with villagers constantly insisting that you need a Game Boy Advance and a link cable to get the most out of the game, in bold blue letters at that.
This post was pointless, but I just thought I'd put my views across.
Matt.
what if you just got into pc's and the internet and a ad comes up saying things like 'your computer data is currently at risk' it could put you off big time.
