Much appreciated

Audio sounds can be made on keyboards or 'Synths' and a midi file will sound different on almost every pc depending on their soundcards, the more expensive ones will usually sound more realistic, whereas a 32mb soundcard will make sounds similar to Gameboy or earlier consoles and pc games.

Midi files are basically just data files that play a song using the available sound card.

I guess the best way of describing a Midi file is like a sheet of music. It has all the notes, the tempo, the key signature, everything in it. When you open a Midi file on your computer this data is interpreted by your soundcard and played using the sounds nearest to those intended.

For example, a Midi file on a computer with SoundcardA may have the lead line played by an Alto Saxaphone, whereas played on a computer with SoundcardB has the lead line played by a Tenor Saxaphone as the Alto isn't available on the soundcard.

Your basically looking at a computers way of interpreting data and playing it using the available sounds.

On the other hand, audio files are recorded sounds. These are recordings of actual music rather than just the data that plays a song depending on the available sounds.
