I feel that the console war is a good thing, competition never hurt anyone. If there were only SEGA and Nintendo (like back in the day)they could keep their prices high and no-one would be able to do anything. High prices are what hit the N64 even with all its quality games. No third party publishers would make games as they were too expensive. Consumers flocked to Playstation with its Platinum range you could get games at £20. N64 was at £40-£50.
Think of it this way if everyone has a driving game, then in order to grab consumers attention something new and groundbreaking has to happen. So Developers are trying new things. This means new ideas what everyone says is one of the most important factors of a game - Originality.
So a Console war is just what the industry needs in my opinion, in order to force developers to seek out new ways to get us to part with our cash. Which we don't mind doing.
On a side issue what is the best Computer Game Series of all time?
Zelda, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Mario, Doom... etc etc
