The characters in games are very important. If you don't like your lead character, you're not really going to want to help them complete a quest, are you? So here are 12 of the characters that I have liked best in games I've played over the years:

Ms Pacman. I played this game on the Atari 2600. Much better than Pacman, on the same console. Pacman was an awful port, with fuzzy graphics. Ms Pacman had a number of different levels, and fruits. Plus she had a little bow in her hair. Possibly the first ever major female game character.

Haggar: Final Fight. Anyone that has played as Haggar will have to agree with me. Haggar rules. He could knock enemies to the ground by holding his arms out, and spinning around. He'd roar as he did it. It was dead cool. He was a wrestler, so you could also pull off a few wrestling moves.

Opa Opa: Fantasy Zone. Opa Opa is a little space ship. The story is so good that you can't help but love the little guy. Oh, and he started off slow, with poor weapons, but you could upgrade him to such an extent that he became almost undefeatable, with his rocket engine, twin big bombs, and big shot.

Alis: Phantasy Star. Apparently the first adventure/RPG game to feature a female lead character. She was cool, trying to defeat Lassic because he was responsible for her bother's death.

Blanka: Street Fighter 2: The first character that I really got used to, Blanka was cool. One of his special moves was dead easy to pull off too, the one where you electrocute your opponent, because apparently Blanka was raised by electric eels. Electric eels? Is that not the best excuse for special powers ever?

Sagat: Street Fighter 2: He had similar mores to Ken and Ryu, but was evil, and he could also do that 'Tiger-Knee' thing. That move ruled.

The girl from Zombies: I don't know her name, but you could choose from a male character, or female one. The male character wore 3D glassed, and had spikey hair. This made the female character even cooler, becuase she didn't have either of these traits!

Sub Zero: Mortal Kombat: Damn he was cool ;-). He could freeze opponents in mid-air, or even better, put an ice patch on the ground, and beat up on opponents whilst they were slipping on it!

Mario: A joy to play as in Super Mario 64. In the other Mario games he has been cool too, with plenty of things he could do. Even in the mario sports games he's a decent character to learn as, as he's good at everything!

Kirby: Kirby's Dream Land etc: Kirby is such a cool character. In a fat and fluffy kind of way. But he could inflate really big, and swallow stuff, then spit it out. And he made really funny noises on his Gameboy games.

Chrono: Chrono Trigger is a fantastic RPG, people still compare new games to it today, see it as something of a benchmark for that type of RPG. Chrono was an excellent lead character, and when you lost him in the game, you really did miss him.

Conker: Conkers Bad Fur Day: He's just funny, both in appearance and actions.

And here's 6 I didn't like:

Bubsy the Bobcat: He had to collect wool. How boring is that? What's he going to do, knit himself another crappy jumper with a 'B' on it? Meant to rival Sonic, but falls way short.

Kazooie: Banjo Kazooie/Tooie: Not funny, and not cool. I just find this bird annoying. Is quite fun to use on Banjo Tooie though when you manage to get rid of Banjo.

The Mouse from Mouse Trap: A tiny little fall would kill him. Damn mouse, land on your feet.

Diddy Kong: I especially don't like Diddy in DK64, when you have to use him to fly through hoops. Damn are those bits tough! When I saw him playing guitar after reaching the end of a level on Donkey Kong Country 2 I was gobsmacked. How cool were they trying to make him? How badly had they failed?

The boy from Zombies: Previously mentioned, but he had spikey hair, and 3D glasses. Damn dork.

Balrog: Street Fighter2: As a boxer, he could only punch. He really couldn't fump very high either. A very limited and frustrating character to use.

So, your favourites, least favourites?

Anyone play Buck Bumble on the N64?

I thought having a bee as a main character was pritty stupid...but thats not my point. I'm talking about the intro music! Anyone here it! Best music on the N64! Some MC chatting some complete and utter crap...absolute class.

Anyway, my fave character? Gotta be Conker

Super cool Squirrel. I got a few squirrels living in the tree behind my house, so its a joy to play as one....

There have been many characters I've liked and disliked. But because I've got to go out in a couple of minutes, I'll just pick my favourite.

Favourite character: "Guts" from Sword Of The Beserk. He's like a medieval Clint Eastwood - doesn't say much, just scowls. He always has one eye closed. He carries a 12ft sword. And when he gets cornered, he goes beserk - slaughtering anything that moves at high speed. But behind his uncompromising facade, he's just a nice guy who wants to be free of violence. A bit cliched I know, but he's cool.
